Here are some questions that are important to ask yourselves when looking for a new house-on-wheels, and just for fun we've made a quiz to predict what you will love to live in!
How many of you will be travelling?
How long will you be travelling?
What is your purchase budget?
Is aircon important to you?
Do you want to do lots of 4wd or off road travel?
Where will you be staying the most?
What is most important to you on your trip?
Need your own amenities?
Will you be travelling through extreme temperatures or seasons?
Caravan
Caravan
You've got the budget, saved hard and will love life on the road in a full van!
Positives: very quick set up and pack down | easy access to beds, belongings, food, drinks and seating areas | all weather living | security | mod cons - toilet/shower/aircon/tv
Negatives: big towing capacity required | tricky to park in town or manouvre into small spaces | big cost outlay to begin with
Camper Trailer
Camper Trailer
What a great way to travel! There are so many options with the camper trailer - you can choose high clearance 4wd models for off road adventures or pop-top and pop-out trailers for more room, storage and facilities.
Positives: Much cheaper outlay compared to a full caravan | More fuel efficient and less towing capacity required | easy to un-hitch and explore in the car
Negatives: Open to the elements! Storms/heat/rain can be an issue | long set up/pack down | No amenities or mod cons |
Bus
Bus
Our personal favourite of course! Welcome to the elite bus loving family group of Australia!
Positives: .....EVERYTHING! My favourite thing is having no set-up, loads of room for living and storage - and we can pull over anywhere and eat or sleep - in all weather.
Negatives: (forced to admit!) Being able to go on dirt roads would be a bonus - but I imagine a lot of regular caravans and camper trailers would have this issue too. Being able to un-hitch and have a run-around car would be handy.
Tent
Tent
If you're still in the planning stages of your big lap, or are keen to take lots of trips away on the weekend, in the school hols, and at every available opportunity then this is the answer for you!
Positives: Affordable | Easy to pack | Accessible | Exciting for the whole family
Negatives: Bad weather - beware! | Long set up and pack down | No storage | Not ideal for long term travel
How Will You Travel Australia?
