What kind of winter rider are you?

Don your brand new winter-specific bike kit, pop hot Ribena in your water bottles, grab your dedicated winter bike and go! You've already put on the spiked tyres, mudguards and lights as you've been checking the forecast for days in anticipation.

Take one look out of the window, dive back into bed and decide that it's a much wiser course of action to drive to work or get the train / bus / a lift.

Decide that it's a bit too icy to ride in, but if things thaw out a little or there's a fresh fall of snow, a post-work ride would be perfect.

Two or three — a windproof jacket, a good waterproof, and a more insulated jacket for cold weather. Or thereabouts.

Well, let's see. There's my cool weather jacket, my windproof shell jacket, my deep winter insulated jacket, my cold and wet weather jacket… basically, a jacket for every conceivable weather scenario

Er… just the one

Pitting your wits against weather, Bear Grylls style, in a test of survival and skill on two wheels.

Out riding in the great outdoors, even if the weather isn't ideal. Turbo trainers are okay, but the open road / trail is miles better!

Somewhere warm, sunny and dry, riding in shorts and short-sleeved jerseys.

Drive through it. Because in your warm and toasty car, latte in the cup holder and tunes on loud, you aren't particularly bothered by puddles.

Charge full-bore at it, creating an impressive bow wave behind you and splashing yourself top to toe — but because you've got all the kit you remain warm and dry.

Approach cautiously, avoiding it if you're on the road bike, but on your mountain bike have heels down, flexed knees and arms, and enjoy the splash!

ALL of it! Improving my cold weather tolerance, testing my stamina and mental strength in frigid conditions, the extra kit I can buy and working out my winter bike wishlist…

Winter fitness gains, quiet roads and trails and the occasional but beautiful crisp winter's day.
