Why does Scotland have themed years?

Themed years can help attract new visitors, additional revenue and provide an opportunity to flaunt what we've got! In 2014, we had Homecoming Scotland. In 2015, we had the Year of Food and Drink. And last year we had the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design. Different themes but one common goal - to celebrate Scotland.

2

What is the theme this year?

2017 is the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology! Scotland is rich in history, proud of its heritage and boasts fascinating archaeology. There are over 450 museums and galleries in Scotland which are home to millions of historic and archaeological objects. The historic environment in Scotland supports around 60,000 jobs.

3

What is history?

History is the study of past events and tells us about what happened in the past. Scotland has a rich history dating back to ancient times with dramatic castles, ancient standing stones, bloody battles and rising monarchs making Scottish history so vast and interesting.

4

What is heritage?

Heritage is linked to history. It refers to treasured objects and qualities that have been passed down from previous generations. With thousands of years worth of history it's not surprising that our heritage is so rich and fascinating. What is Scottish heritage? Think clans, ceilidhs, bagpipes, highland games and haggis!

5

What is archaeology?

Archaeology is how we find out about the past by excavating historic sites and studying artefacts found there. Long forgotten villages, viking and roman artefacts and ancient dwellings all tell a story about what happened on Scottish soil many years ago.
