Scientists working in Antarctica have discovered a huge colony of about 1.5 million Adelie penguins, which they previously believed were close to extinction.

During the past 25 years the number of penguins has fallen by 65%.

Climate change has been causing the ice to melt. Because of this, the numbers of krill (the penguin’s main food) have been dropping significantly. This affects the population as they have nothing to eat.

Luckily, the ice has not melted badly in the Danger Islands, where the penguins live, so they are surviving.
