In a development unprecedented in India's history, seven opposition parties led by Congress have submitted a notice to vice-president Venkaiah Naidu for the impeachment of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, on grounds of "misbehaviour".
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has accused Congress of using impeachment as a "political tool" and called the move a "revenge petition" against the Judge Loya verdict.
Congress itself is divided over the issue, with some claiming the motion has nothing to do with the Loya case, and other senior leaders refraining from signing the petition saying “no politics should be done over court verdicts”.
