Build a Shelter

Find an area with some trees and start collecting long logs and branches which you can lean together to build a framework – if possible place one log across two trees wedged by branches to make the top! Make sure to interlink them at the top placing one either side so they don’t slip!

If you have a big sheet of waterproof material use this on the frame to make a tent shape! If not, use leafy branches or other natural materials to stuff between the logs to make your shelter watertight!

Ideally use a flat area of ground to build on, otherwise you might find rain pouring downhill into your shelter

Build a Fire

Gather dry tinder and thin clumps of wiry bark which will be lit once you’ve created the spark!

Find a flat piece of dry wood and mark a notch

Using a sturdy stick, place it in the notch and begin rolling it between your hands, starting at the top and moving them downwards. Keep a fast pace and strong pressure into the notch.

Soon sparks should develop and smoke from the friction will appear! Make sure your tinder nest is close so that it can catch and produce a flame!

When the fire has begun, build small logs around the tinder nest to ensure lots of oxygen can circulate and to keep the fire burning!

As well as keeping you warm, the fire can also be used to cook food and attract attention of others who may be able to help you

Collect fresh water

Don’t collect seawater!

If there is a freshwater stream or waterfall nearby, collect water as close to the source as possible, in a fast flowing stretch of water. Avoid collecting water from a patch where it is not flowing and is very still.

If there is no water source nearby, create a makeshift bucket to collect rainwater in the hope of the weather helping your search!

Make a weapon

Using a sharp piece of stone or wood, file a long stick into a spear. The pointy end can be used to catch fish or wild animals if there are any around! But you’ll have to be quick to catch them!

If you’re feeling really ambitious you could try making a bow and arrows!

Forage for food

Have a search for any berries or wild mushrooms but make sure they’re not poisonous!

Use the weapon you made earlier to catch fish if you’re near a water supply, or you might even spy some wild rabbits you can cook over the fire if you’re lucky!
