Interview: Jack And Jack Talk To Us About TØP, Comedy And Their New Book

We had no idea it was even a possibility until the publisher reached out to us. Jack and I were like ok - what can we do that would really just tell our story and get across what we want to get across to our fans?

We think it really is just a story of friendship and it’s really a story that is there to inspire our fans more than anything. The fact they can do anything they wanted if they had someone by their side, a friend by their side through thick and thin, you know what I’m saying?

I think something Jack and I really wanted our fans to take away from the book is really just a series of positive messages.

Always keep your head up and always keep going through anything because if you keep working hard things will pay off - and there are going to be failures along the way because that’s just life. Everybody goes through those down times, but it’s really all about perseverance and just always sticking with it.

We made these videos where we would just talk about our life experiences. We bounced back and fourth between us for a good three to four months. We were talking like there wasn’t a camera there about all kinds of topics. Then our writer cultivated those conversations into something that was more readable and I guess something that was more organised than our thoughts.

It ended up being what it is right now and it’s something that we’re all really proud of and we think it has a great message for our fans.

It’s definitely more for the fans, who already know about us.

But I don’t think it’s limited to just our fans, I think if someone’s just passing by in the store, you know I think it would be an interesting read for anybody because even if you don’t know us, we really do explain who we are in the beginning, we do a whole back story of like I guess school, and what we’ve been doing these past few years so I think it’s really captivating to anybody.

I mean honestly right now it’s very unbalanced, we’re definitely focusing a lot more on music as our priority. I think music has always been our number one passion but somehow comedy shines through.

Comedy will always be there, It will always be something that we have but as of right now, music is just where the passion lies, so that’s really what we’re focusing on heavily right now.

I’d say a lot of things are personal experiences. Something that Jack’s gone through or something I’ve gone through or maybe something that we’ve both gone through.

The really cool part about being in a duo is that maybe one song is only from Jack's perspective so I get the chance to sing from his perspective. I love that part of being in a duo because maybe, it allows an insight into elements of life you yourself might never experience.

But then on top of that we also like to make a lot of observational music, you know about stuff that’s going on in the world or maybe stuff that we see our fans going through.

Honestly I feel like the very first time I heard of 'Twenty Øne Piløts' was when I saw them on Justin Bieber’s Instagram page. He was doing a 30 day countdown to his song ‘What Do you Mean?’ being released. And I don’t know why but the name (Twenty Øne Piløts) is just like so captivating. But there were like seven or ten people in the picture I saw (on Bieber's Instagram) - so I had no idea that it was just two of them. But now I’ve done my research and I’m actually a huge fan of them and I love all their music.

Their group name is very thought-provoking and I think in that section of the book we were talking about what our alternative group name would be if it wasn't ‘Jack and Jack’. We were like ‘oh Twenty Øne Piløts, that's very creative and unique. It makes you wonder about who they are. You have no idea what it even means at first.’ We really love the whole abstract nature of the group name that they have. That’s something we’d have maybe done if we hadn’t picked Jack and Jack - but yeah very cool, very cool group.

It’s coming out September 8th in the UK, that’s shortly after released in the US. You can get it at pretty much any book store, as well as online. There's also going to be an audio book coming out so you can just listen to it, Jack and I actually recorded it so our voices are on there.

We’ll be coming there asap, hopefully for a show. Hopefully we can also stop in at some bookstores when we go and sign some copies and do something for the fans. So yeah I mean definitely keep your eye out in the UK because we’ll be coming over very soon.
