Alicia Silverstone

You know her from: Clueless (1995)

At 18, Silverstone looked set for superstardom after her turn as impossibly spoilt and effortlessly cool Beverly Hills schoolgirl Cher. But, just two years later, she was winning a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress for her performance as Batgirl in the terrible Batman & Robin. It was downhill from there.

Where is she now? Silverstone has starred in a smattering of films here and there – she was Anne Heche’s love interest in comedy Catfight, and appeared alongside fellow 90s icons Molly Ringwald and Christian Slater in drama King Cobra, plus she is in in the adaptation of Joy Nicholson’s coming-of-age novel The Tribes Of Palos Verdes, set, like Clueless, in an affluent suburb of Los Angeles. She's currently starring in American Woman – a series co-executive produed by the Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards.

What she should do next: We think the time is right for Silverstone to play the grown-up Cher. We want to know if her rampant materialism won out or her Pismo Beach disaster relief efforts at the end of the film were the beginnings of a career in political activism. Failing that, we’d like to see her playing a clued-up American mom in a British sitcom. The girl has a gift for one-liners.

Sarah Michelle Gellar

You know her from: Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1997-2003), Cruel Intentions (1999), Scooby-Doo (2002)

Gellar will forever be associated with the role of high-school student turned fighter of demons, Buffy Summers, although she also made a brilliantly calculating Kathryn Merteuil in Cruel Intentions, a teen update of Dangerous Liaisons.

Where is she now? Gellar recently made a pilot for a TV series of Cruel Intentions, but it hasn’t quite got off the ground.

What she should do next: Fitness videos? Get Buff with Buffy? OK, maybe not. But there’s definitely scope for a “We Love the 90s” version of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, starring Sarah Michelle and husband Freddie Prinze Jr. Although, given that their kids are called Charlotte and Rocky Prinze, it’s going to have to be called Life With The Prinzes.

3

Rick Moranis

You know him from: Ghostbusters (1984), Honey I Shrunk The Kids (1989), The Flintstones (1994)

Rick Moranis made a career out of playing the comedy geek in a slew of films in the 80s and 90s. He finally shed his glasses to play Barney Rubble in The Flintstones.

Where is he now? After his wife died of cancer in 1991, Moranis stepped back from the screen to concentrate on raising their two children, returning only for the occasional voice role. He has released two albums of comedy songs in the past decade. He turned down a cameo role in the new Ghostbusters movie, but insists he has not retired from film acting; he’s just being selective.

What he should do next: Face it, Moranis was born to play Joe 90, the bespectacled child superspy created by the maker of Thunderbirds, Gerry Anderson. There have been rumours of a movie version since as far back as 2003. Unfortunately, it seems Moranis has missed the ideal age to play the character by about five decades. There has to be a way!

4

Meg Ryan

You know her from: When Harry Met Sally… (1989), Sleepless In Seattle (1993), You’ve Got Mail (1998)

Meg Ryan was the female heart-throb of the 90s. She could do fun, adorable and sexy without really trying, and had an almost flawless box-office record to show for it.

Where is she now? There’s been little to write home about since time-travelling comedy Kate & Leopold in 2001, but Ryan has now found a way to get better roles: directing herself. Ithaca (2015), based on a William Saroyan novel, was her directorial debut and she even got Tom Hanks to star in it. She also starred in Lisa Kudrow's series, Web Therapy, which Stephen Mangan has adapted for Channel 4.

What she should do next: Do we want Meg Ryan back? Yes, yes, oh god yes! She does sweet and funny as well as anyone. Please can someone write her a comedy as good as – no, even better than – Netflix’s Grace And Frankie?

5

Brendan Fraser

You know him from: George Of The Jungle (1997), The Mummy (1999)

As far back as California Man in 1992, in which he played a caveman released from a block of ice, Fraser cornered the (admittedly limited) market in 90s portrayals of primitive man. He later struck gold playing adventurer Rick O’Connell in The Mummy franchise.

Where is he now? He popped up in Texas Rising on HISTORY® a while back, and most recently shot a weird based-on-a-true-story film about near-death experiences, Behind The Curtain Of Night, which has yet to see the light of day.

What he should do next: Cruelly ignored, we feel, for a role in The Legend Of Tarzan (2016), Fraser appears to have left his loin cloth far behind. But surely there’s scope for a blockbuster sequel, Tarzan V George Of The Jungle. You heard it here first.

6

Luke Perry

You know him from: Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990-2000)

Ohio-born Luke Perry was the archetypal teen heart-throb of the archetypal teen TV soap of the 90s, Beverly Hills, 90210. But like co-stars Jason Priestley and Shannen Doherty, he struggled to break out of his most famous role.

Where is he now? Perry has recently made his comeback, with a starring role as the father of a teen heart-throb (we see what they've done there) in Netflix's Riverdale.

What he should do next: We see a really chilling horror role for Perry (and Priestley) in a TV series about a high school that you can never leave.
