When Hagrid's Sad Childhood Turned Even Sadder

For a while, fans have been speculating on what Rubeus Hagrid's patronus would be. A Hippogriff? A dragon? Then, J.K. Rowling dropped the hammer, and it hit us like a whomping willow. She said that Hagrid would never be able to produce a because it's a "very difficult spell." And then we figured out what she meant by that. The patronus spell required a happy memory. Could that mean that Hagrid, who at a young age was abandoned by his mother, has no happy memories at all?!

When We All Had To Wonder Why Bad Things Happen To Good People

From the start we accepted , with heavy hearts, the tragedy of James and Lily Potter. But when we calculated their birth dates and death dates, we realized that they were just 21 years old when they were killed. They were barely out of Hogwarts, for cry eye!

When We Found Out That JK Saved Luna

We fell in love with Evanna Lynch as Luna Lovegood, but we fell a little deeper when we discovered that, as a teen, she suffered from anorexia. She wrote letters to J.K. Rowling about her struggle, and the author responded, saying, "anorexia is destructive, not creative, and the brave thing is not to succumb to it." When Lynch publicly gave Rowling credit for her recovery, who, outside of Slytherin House, didn't shed big tears of joy?

When Maggie Sacrificed For Us

During the filming of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Maggie Smith was suffering with breast cancer. Of course she soldiered on, but the sad fact was that it sucked for her. Really sucked. She said of the experience, "The chemotherapy was something that makes you feel much worse than the cancer itself. You feel horribly sick. I was holding on to railings, thinking ‘I can’t do this.'” Spoiler alert: she did it. Somehow.

When We All Remembered The Baby

We all mourned the deaths of Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks Lupin because they were two of our favourite characters, but when we remembered the baby...the tears wouldn't stop flowing. Poor Edward "Teddy" Lupin. Both his parents were killed while he slept in his crib, and he was left to be raised by maternal grandmother Andromeda Tonks without ever fully experiencing how awesome they were.

When We Had To Deal With The Unimaginable

None of us held it together when Fred Weasley died. (And if you say you did, you're a liar!) But the knife was twisted ever more deeply as we came to grips with it. Imagine losing a brother. Incredibly sad! Now, imagine losing a twin! Unimaginable. It's too sad. So sad, even J.K. Rowling apologised to fans for it. We won't be forgiving her any time soon, though. The wound is too fresh.

When We Heard The Saddest Fan Theory Ever

We've often debated why Harry Potter's Hogwarts class was so small, claiming the numbers just don't add up. But some fans have posited this heartbreaking theory: Maybe there was a reason wizards weren't hooking up and giving birth during Voldemort's reign of terror. Maybe only the bravest (or foolish) couples dared to attempt to start a family during such a dangerous time. Maybe. And you know what else? Maybe it's no accident that those are the children who ultimately brought Voldemort down.

When Alan Rickman Was The First Casualty Of 2016

For Potter fans, the first cut of 2016 was the deepest. We still haven't gotten over it. Because no matter how many years go by, we will love Alan Rickman. Always.
