The East End Esplanade host annual Frida Fest

East End's Esplanade hosted its annual Frida Fest April 14-15. The festival paid tribute to the late Frida Kahlo, a Mexican artist who is most known for her surrealist paintings and self portraits.

The award-winning Esplanade on Navigation is located in Houston's historic second ward right across from the Original Ninfas on Navigation. The Esplanade hosts dozens of festivals and farmers markets each month, inviting Houstonians from all over to to attend.

The Frida Festival featured many attractions, including an attempt to beat a Guinness World Record of the most Frida Kahlo impersonators in one place. Attendees of all ages were invited to participate in the world record attempt. A few of the requirements included a unibrow, flowers worn in the hair and a knee-length floral printed dress.

Vendors of all kinds attended the festival to showcase their artwork, apparel and even churros. Planet Churros is a churro food truck that specializes in topping plain churros with fun toppings such as Nutella, Fruity Pebbles and even bacon.

Artists from all over Houston attended the festival to display and sell their artwork. Many of the art featured were Frida Kahlo or Mexican inspired.

Not only did Frida Fest feature Frida Kahlo inspired goods but gave many Mexican vendors the opportunity to feature their authentic blouses and dresses, artwork, embroidered work and textiles.

Leonardo Design features items such as Mexican embroidered bags, framed artwork, dresses and blouses and of course, Frida Kahlo goods.

Many vendors, such as Tierra de los Artesanos, featured authentic Mexican goods at the festival. Tierra de los Artesanos' mission is to economically empower Mexican artists in Mexico, as well as Mexican immigrant artisans in the United States.
