Countdown to Cape Town's Day Zero
Cape Town, South Africa's water drought is about to lead to a water shutoff
Cape Town, South Africa's water drought is about to lead to a water shutoff
On April 12, Cape Town will become the first major city to run out of water
Is Cape Town's plight only the tip of the problem?
What Does Day Zero Mean?
How did this happen?
There are many reasons Cape Town is about to run out of water:
Theewaterskloof Dam Reservoir (Jan. 6, 2011 to Jan. 24, 2018)
Due to recent years of severe drought and little rainfall, the dams are drying up. 100 percent of the water in Cape Town comes from six dams dependent on rainfall. Photo courtesy of: CNN.com
So, what's the plan?
How would a Capetonian live off of 50 liters per day per person? The government has a plan.

What does this mean for Capetonians?
The water shortage problem is causing many politicians and citizens to turn on each other. The politicians are irritated because 45 percent of people are not complying with regulations and the citizens are frustrated because the government did not inform them this would be a possibility. The issues are also cousing politcal tensions across party lines.
In addition, gangs trying to make extra money are now dealing in water. The government says the activity is not illegal, but it is unethical to price gouge for water.
The government is stressing 90 second showers and families to flush only once per day. Schools are forgoing uniforms to save on laundry water and they are requiring students to bring 2 liters (0.53 gallons) of water with them to classes. People are recycling bathwater for toilet water.
Capetonians are relying on bottled water for consumption.
How will Day Zero affect the tourism industry?
Even though tourism is a growing industry, Day Zero will negatively impact the economy.
Around the globe, people are worried.
Both the British and Americans are trying to warn their respective countries of the impact of Cape Town's water shortage.
Houston and Capetown
Following Hurricane Harvey's impact (50 inches and 27 trillion gallons of rain on Houston), the discussion on world water issues has taken center stage.
What does this mean for Houstonians?
