Many businesses prefer wall covers to protect their walls from any little mishaps that may happen, even though it is often more expensive. Lastly, there is a slightly different application process.

Step 2: Tools/Materials for applying wallpaper

There are some essential Tools and Materials that you will need:

  • Rubber gloves
  • Bucket
  • Paint roller
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint tray
  • Sponge
  • Sandpaper
  • Straight edge
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Primer
  • Drywall compound (if you have any holes or uneven spots)
  • Putty knife
  • Utility knife
  • Wallpaper hanging kit (adhesive, tray, brush, smoothing brush, seam roller)
  • Wallpaper

Step 3: Preparing the surface

If you are replacing old wallpaper, you will need to take it off. Never apply new wallpaper over old wallpaper as this will yield a very weak bond with the wall. To remove the old wallpaper, use a scoring tool to poke small holes. Then, use a spray bottle filled with warm water to spray the wall and soak the paper. Wait 10 minutes and then scrape off the old wallpaper with ease. Most of it should come off this way and any small spots that you missed can be taken off with the sandpaper.

If there are any holes or uneven areas, use the drywall compound and putty knife to fill these in. You must let the putty dry for 24 hours and then sand it smooth. Finally, wipe the dust of the wall with a damp sponge and let it dry for a few minutes.

Step 4: Priming the surface

You should always prime the wall before you apply wallpaper because otherwise it will not stick to your wall very well. For larger walls, use a roller, but if you are working on a smaller wall, a paintbrush should be enough. Let the primer dry for 2 hours. If you would like an extra tough bond, two coats is recommended.

Step 5: Applying the Wallpaper

Start by measuring the dimensions of the wall you are working on. Measure out one piece top to bottom making sure that you leave at least 4 inches on both ends. Proceed to cutting the piece and do so with the straight edge of the level. Put the piece on a flat surface and apply a thin layer of the adhesive in a figure eight motion. Make sure you spread it out evenly so that there will not be any visible clumps once applied.

Now, for the most nerve wracking part; applying it to the wall. Make sure that you apply the first piece in the most discreet part of the room because the last seam will be there and it will not be symmetrical with the rest. Make sure you fold the edges as you carry the wallpaper to the wall so you don’t get the paper dirty.

Align the paper with the guidelines that you drew earlier to assure that the wallpaper is going on straight. Once you place the wallpaper on the wall, smooth it with the use of the smoothing brush. Now, you may trim the excess wallpaper from the top and bottom using the straight edge of the level and utility knife.

Step 6: Overlapping

This is perhaps the hardest part of applying wallpaper. It is essential to have a ¾ inch overlap to ensure a smooth transition from one piece of wallpaper to the next. Use the seam roller to press the seams together tightly.

Overview

If you are looking to save money by applying wallpaper by yourself rather than hiring a company to do so is most definitely worth it. Just remember to fold over the edges when applying to prevent the wallpaper from getting dirty and make the seams as smooth as possible so they are not noticeable. Lastly, don’t be nervous, it is easy and there is a larger chance of you messing up if you are nervous!
