Miller will surely get full debut?
But Miller, brought on at half-time with the Stags trailing 4-1, added much-needed urgency and life to the side in the second period, made one goal, scored another and almost inspired a remarkable recovery.
Sadly the efforts of Miller and fellow energetic substitute Danny Rose were not quite enough to rescue the Stags from a desperately poor opening half hour.
Earlier in the week Miller had scored a hat-trick for the reserves and Flitcroft admitted he was tempted to hand the striker his full Stags debut.
The manager said, however, the calibre of the opposition for the reserves affected his decision to limit Miller to his eighth substitute's appearance.
Now he might be thinking otherwise. Yes, twin strikers Lee Angol and Kane Hemmings had done well in the previous two matches - defeats against the top two.
And, yes, Angol and Hemmings also scored on Saturday.
But at the same time they have missed plenty of chances too and many thought before the Crewe match that it was time for Miller to be handed his first start.

After the defeat to Crewe, Flitcroft admitted he might have got the decision to delay Miller's full debut wrong... surely Miller will get his chance from kick-off in the must-win game at Stevenage on Tuesday?
The good news for Stags fans is that Rose is returning from injury and the other three strikers are all in goalscoring form.

Manager must inspire his players
Miller and Rose brought greater energy to the Stags in the defeat against Crewe and fellow substitute Krystian Pearce, who replaced central defender Zander Diamond after just half an
hour and the fourth goal conceded, also made a massive difference.
That early switch, combined with the Stags change of shape and change of attitude, showed that there is still a fighting spirit within the squad.
It also showed that Flitcroft is not afraid of making big decisions in matches and can inspire the side.
It is that inspiration which has been missing at times under his short period in charge at One Call Stadium - and perhaps the biggest difference between his management and that of his predecessor, Steve Evans.
“You saw in the second half they were fighting for a cause and the pride of the town. But that has to be for 90 minutes.”
David Flitcroft after the 4-3 home defeat to Crewe.
When Evans walked away from the Stags, the one thing that even his critics had to admit was that he was able to inspire and get the best out of his squad.
Somehow Flitcroft has now got to do that for 90 minutes in each of the last five matches of the season.
He is more than capable. He has guided Bury to promotion from this division. It is his Swindon squad that won so well at One Call Stadium this season and are now breathing down the Stags' necks in the play-off race.
But if Flitcroft does not find that inspiration - and if the terrible run of results does not improve - then the supporters will be urging owner John Radford to make another managerial change.

Play-off place not in Stags' own hands
When Mansfield Town won at promotion rivals Exeter City in February, the Stags fans were pressing hard for the third automatic promotion place in League Two.
Eight games later - seven under David Flitcroft - and they are still waiting for the next victory.
Four successive defeats after three points from Flitcroft's first three matches in charge has put the hopes of League One football next season in doubt.
It is hard for the supporters and also, no doubt, everyone connected with the football club to take.
But if things can go wrong so quickly, equally they can turn again in the Stags' favour with the squad.
There are five matches left, including the small matter of a trip to relegation-threatened local rivals Chesterfield on Saturday after Tuesday's trip to Accrington.
Win the two matches this week and suddenly the Stags would have the all-important momentum - as well as the bragging rights over the Spireites and the feelgood factor from the supporters such a win would bring.
But all five are, according to the league table, very winnable - and that is just what the Stags might have to do to claim the last play-off place.
They are currently two points behind seventh-placed Coventry with those above the Sky Blues probably out of reach.
Coventry still have to play fifth-placed Lincoln City, however, and the Imps have to travel to leaders Accrington.
That means four wins from those last five matches might be enough for the Stags - but anything less and the promotion dream could be over.
