What a response to rare defeat

Seven days later you have to say what a remarkable response the Stags players and manager Steve Evans produced.
Six goals scored, no goals conceded, six points gained, a demolition of play-off rivals Newport and, more importantly perhaps, an impressive win away from home at automatic promotion contenders Exeter.

The only frustration for everyone at the Stags - and I have mentioned this before - is that despite the club's remarkable run over the past three months, they are still unable to break into the top three because of similar good runs elsewhere.
But that will surely come. For now Evans' men just need to maintain their amazing run and, if they do, then automatic promotion place will surely follow.

Play-off place must be minimum target

Evans said last week he felt the promotion race would go right down to the wire - the Stags have just got to make sure they are still in the race in the next two months or so.
For now their first target - aside from the obvious consistency of positive results - must be to try to ensure a play-off place as minimum.
A small gap of six points has now emerged between the Stags in fourth place and Lincoln in seventh, for instance.
Crawley in ninth are eight points behind and have played a game more.
But, as Evans alluded to, there are still many sides in with a chance of making the play-offs, perhaps as far as down as Cambridge in 14th, who are eight points outside the top seven.

Danny Rose celebrates his winner at Exeter.

Rose blooms under Evans

All the Stags can do is remain focused week in week out - and they need the fans with them too.
Next Saturday's clash with Coventry City is sure to be played in a cup final-style atmosphere and the amber and blue need all the support they can get to get over the finishing line in this thrilling promotion race.
One of the fans' heroes is Danny Rose - and is there any wonder. His goals and assists this season have earned the Stags 14 points alone and he was in the right place at the right time again at Exeter.
The way Evans has developed the striker he inherited has been a joy to watch and Rose's fourth goal in five games to win the three points at Exeter could be priceless come May.
His return of 17 goals so far this season is terrific - if he continues to score the Stags will not be far short of their promotion target.
The striker said after the win at Exeter he had not set himself any personal targets for the rest of the season - and rightly so.
Why put added pressure on yourself at a time of the season when there is enough pressure anyway with the prize of promotion so close.

Too early for points targets

Talking of targets, there has been lots of speculation in recent days as to the points tally needed to secure a play-off and/or automatic promotion spot.
For what it is worth, I think it is still too early to speculate about the amount of points needed at this stage to finish either in the top seven or in the top three.
There are so many clubs still involved, as I have already said, and it is impossible to predict results at the moment.
Who would have thought that Accrington, for instance, in the top three would have failed to win at bottom club Barnet.
Speculation is great and there is much to talk about at the Stags. For now, I am happy to just enjoy the ride.
