Amal say

Hello

A

Alice

Alice say

Hi

A

Alice

Alice say

How long have you been on Lesbos?

A

Amal

Amal say

6 months and 3 weeks

A

Alice

Alice say

Do you have family with you?

A

Amal

Amal say

No I am alone

A

Alice

Alice say

How did you end up there?

A

Amal

Amal say

From Turkey by boat

A

Alice

Alice say

What is it like there?

A

Amal

Amal say

It is like the trip of death

A

Amal

Amal say

But at the same time it is better than staying in Turkey. I thought if I die it is my fate and if I reach Greece my life will be better

A

Alice

Alice say

Can you tell me a bit more about the conditions there?

A

Alice

Alice say

How many people are there? Do you have enough to eat, and clothes etc to stay warm?

A

Amal

Amal say

Sorry for yesterday we didn't continue. I didn't have internet.
Can we talk at 9pm?

A

Alice

Alice say

Yes no problem

A

Alice

Alice say

Can you tell me a bit more about what it's like on Lesbos?

A

Amal

Amal say

In Lesbos or in Moria camp?

A

Alice

Alice say

Moria camp

A

Amal

Amal say

So crowded it is for about 2000 person and now there are about 5000 live in . And 2 month ago there were 7000 .

A

Amal

Amal say

It is dirty, not safe, no protection for people, the food is so bad, it is damgerous to walk or go to toilet alone at night

A

Alice

Alice say

What kinds of dangers are there?

A

Amal

Amal say

A lot of drunk people at night. Dangers of fighting or to be raped

A

Alice

Alice say

Do you know many people this has happened to?

A

Amal

Amal say

Yes I heard many stories.

A

Alice

Alice say

Has anything ever happened to you in terms of crime there?

A

Amal

Amal say

For me no. Because I didn't go out of my section at night . And our section is for single women and it is has a gate and a guard in front of it

A

Alice

Alice say

I am pleased to hear that

A

Amal

Amal say

The people who live in Moria for a long time and don't know what will happen later and are afraid of rejection and deportation and don't have anything to do , these things affect their mentality and some of them take drugs and drink alcohol to forget

A

Amal

Amal say

Especially the teenagers and minors

A

Alice

Alice say

For yourself, do you have hope that you will leave soon?

A

Amal

Amal say

I had my approval for asylum 2 weeks ago. Before that I didn't have any hope

A

Alice

Alice say

That is brilliant news Amal. Do you know how much longer it will take?

A

Alice

Alice say

And where do you hope to go?

A

Amal

Amal say

If I find job in Greece I will stay here

A

Amal

Amal say

I still have a second interview after one year and 6 month. I haven't finished yet. It was the first approval

A

Alice

Alice say

Can you tell me a bit about your life in Syria? (What job did you do there? Did you have children or a husband? )

A

Amal

Amal say

I worked in the ministry of health as a medical statistician for 24 year. And in my free time I taught english as a private teacher

A

Amal

Amal say

I don't have husband or children

A

Alice

Alice say

Medical statistician sounds fascinating

A

Alice

Alice say

Do you miss the job?

A

Amal

Amal say

Yes

A

Amal

Amal say

Of course

A

Amal

Amal say

Now I am working in NGO as a volunteer teaching English and translate for Arabic refugees. And I taught English with BRF school inside Moria for 3 months also as a volunteer

A

Alice

Alice say

Do you leave Moria for your current job?

A

Amal

Amal say

Yes I live now in a house for volunteers who work in this ngo

A

Amal

Amal say

But I am still going to Moria

A

Alice

Alice say

Oh great, so does that mean you are no longer living in Moria?

A

Amal

Amal say

 Yes

A

Alice

Alice say

That is great. Are you much happier outside of the camp?

A

Amal

Amal say

Moria is my community, my people, but I can't live there now because I have job

A

Amal

Amal say

It is difficult to live with volunteers. They are helping refugees but they will not understand the situation of refugees. Their point of view is different than ours

A

Alice

Alice say

I understand

A

Alice

Alice say

Where do the volunteers come from?

A

Amal

Amal say

Different countries. Europe, America, ....

A

Alice

Alice say

Are you the only Syrian in the house?

A

Amal

Amal say

Yes

A

Alice

Alice say

Do you feel at home at all in Greece?

A

Amal

Amal say

I have good friends (who) support me and the nature of the country similar to Syria. But nothing like home

A

Alice

Alice say

Would you want to return to Syria if it was safe to do so?

A

Amal

Amal say

I would like but I don't think I will find job

A

Amal

Amal say

I was fired from my job and if I return I have an exonomic trial

A

Alice

Alice say

I understand. Why were you fired from your job?

A

Amal

Amal say

After one month I applied for 5 months off and my boss didn't agree and they fired me

A

Alice

Alice say

Was that during the conflict?

A

Amal

Amal say

Yes

A

Alice

Alice say

Where did you live in Syria?

A

Amal

Amal say

After one month I left Syria and I was in Turkey

A

Amal

Amal say

I lived in Damascus

A

Alice

Alice say

What made you decide to come to Europe?

A

Amal

Amal say

Many things

A

Amal

Amal say

Sorry I don't have time to explain. Can we continue later

A

Alice

Alice say

Absolutely

A

Amal

Amal say

Sorry I have something to do now

A

Alice

Alice say

Just let me know when you're free again

A

Amal

Amal say

Of course

A

Alice

Alice say

Thanks - have a great day!

A

Amal

Amal say

Thank you

A

Amal

Amal say

Hello! If you have time now we can continue

A

Alice

Alice say

So sorry Amal I just saw this

A

Alice

Alice say

Are you available now?

A

Amal

Amal say

I need one hour

A

Alice

Alice say

No problem - would tomorrow be better?

A

Amal

Amal say

I will be on a train in an hour

A

Alice

Alice say

What time is suitable for you?

A

Amal

Amal say

I don't know about tomorrow

A

Amal

Amal say

I will text you tomorrow

A

Alice

Alice say

Sure. Have a good night!

A

Amal

Amal say

You too

A

Amal

Amal say

Good evening! How are you

A

Alice

Alice say

Hi Amal, good to hear from you

A

Alice

Alice say

Shall we continue with what made you come to Europe? And how you ended up on Lesbos?

A

Amal

Amal say

Ok

A

Amal

Amal say

I decided to come to Europe because of the war, death everywhere, I lived in the area of the government and also because I was working in the main hospital of Damascus I was afraid of the arrest of the free army. If I lived in area of free army I was afraid from the government. I left my home and my parents stuck there for 7 months without food without light without anything and when came out they were in a bad situation. My mum died after one year. I lived alone afraid of everything and hate both of who were fighting

A

Amal

Amal say

Sometimes I felt I can't tolerate the situation and one day I will shout and said everything no matter if they kill me or arrest me.

A

Amal

Amal say

I lived as a stranger in my country

A

Alice

Alice say

That is awful, I'm so sorry Amal

A

Alice

Alice say

Did you have help leaving Syria?

A

Amal

Amal say

It is ok

A

Amal

Amal say

I don't understand

A

Alice

Alice say

Did you have any help from an NGO or the UN?

A

Amal

Amal say

No

A

Alice

Alice say

How did you get to Europe?

A

Amal

Amal say

I found a smuggler from Syria to Turkey. Then another one from Turkey to Greece

A

Alice

Alice say

What was the journey like?

A

Amal

Amal say

I arrived Turkey in Oct 2016. I stayed first for 2 months in Izmir then left to Istanbul and stayed there for 7 months

A

Amal

Amal say

It was so difficult and we were afraid from arresting or be killing on the boarder

A

Alice

Alice say

Is life in Greece what you had imagined it to be?

A

Amal

Amal say

I imagined that I will stay for one or 2 weeks then continue to another country. But now if I find job here I will stay

A

Alice

Alice say

Do you think the conditions in Moria need to be improved?

A

Amal

Amal say

It shouldn't be something called Moria

A

Amal

Amal say

The people shouldn't stay in Moria more than one or 2 weeks

A

Amal

Amal say

It is not for human
