While the Macarena techincally debuted in 1993, on Los del Rio's album A Mi Me Gusta, it became an actual #1 hit on August 20, 1996, and it's been enthralling and confusing partygoers ever since. Here's the original music video in all its glory:

But who or what is Macarena? Well, we finally have an explanation for that, too!

Apparently the song was originally written about a Venezuelan woman named Madalena that Antonio Romero Monge, one of the lead singers of Los del Rio, was enchanted by at a party, but he later changed the name to Macarena, after his daughter!
