Latics v Millers

PAUL Warne's battlers were good value for their goalless draw in the back yard of League One leaders Wigan Athletic as the play-offs edge nearer.

ANALYSIS: The right time to play it smart

IT wasn't the most eye-catching scoreline of the season or score highly on the thrill-ometer.
The feeling of satisfaction in the Rotherham United camp was still clear after this professional shut-out job on the most dangerous side in the league.
The 1,200 plus travelling supporters at the DW Stadium saw another side to their team on Saturday, a side that could serve the Millers well as the campaign reaches crunch time.
The attacking instincts were reined in and a little more caution employed. The opposition were treated with respect, but not too much.
Rotherham got their tactics and the balance right and the 0-0 draw, their first in two years, was a fair result between two teams who could be meeting back in the Championship next season.
Wigan manager Paul Cook paid one of the biggest compliments. "Rotherham caused us all sorts of problems," he said. Coming from the boss of the title favourites, it was praise indeed.
The Millers still came back over the Pennines wondering what might have been if they'd capitalised on a bright start. Michael Smith's early effort, foiled by a desperate late deflection, sounded a warning that it might not be a straight-forward afternoon for the leaders. Ryan Williams also demanded a good save from Christian Walton.
At Charlton a fortnight ago, Rotherham had gone with a five-man midfield to stiffen things up but failed to defended their 18-yard box well enough.
They did this time and none more so than Michael Ihiekwe. Making is first start since February, the sometimes fragile centre-half set the defensive standard against a side that has plundered 81 goals this term.
The irrepressible Smith never stopped hassling the Wigan back line and down the flanks there was plenty of go-forward from the recalled Williams and Jon Taylor. They made sure injured pair Joe Newell and Anthony Forde weren't missed. Williams was only a yard away from breaking the deadlock late on from a wicked drive late on.
Warne reckons Wigan are the best team in the league "by a country mile." While they didn't look like it for long periods on Saturday, they were only allowed to play as well as Rotherham let them.
Nick Powell is such an influential player for them and was the late match-winner in this fixture last term. This time he clearly wasn't fit and retired from the action at half time.
The prolific Will Grigg had only a couple of sniffs of goal and even when the Latics had a go after half time, they were allowed precious few glimpses of the whites of the posts.
After weathering the storm, Rotherham had a big penalty yell for handball but were relieved when Michael Jacobs and then substitute James Vaughan plonked two decent chances into the stand.
All told, a really good a bonus point. The ticket to the play-offs is just about secured.

WHAT THEY SAID

“ I was proud of the lads. We asked them to play brave against a good team and I think they did. It was a good day at the office.”

REACTION - Ben Purrington

"We felt solid throughout the game. Early on we had a few good chances and it was a great point going into Gillingham. We're not far off now and hopefully we can get a few more wins and seal the deal.”
