What is acid reflux/GERD? Acid reflux diet plan

Acid reflux is when the acids from the stomach rise up on your esophagus. This can cause the body to suffer from heartburn, stomach burn or chest burn. This can happen due to many reasons but it generally means that your lower esophageal sphincter is weak.
This can be prevented by eating the right kind of food and maintaining a proper diet plan.
Here are the few things that you can do to maintain that diet plan

1. Aim for a healthy weight

GERD, also called gastroesophageal reflux disease causes many symptoms, one of which is heartburn. Having too much weight around the stomach area puts pressure on the stomach and that leaves the body prone to increased levels of risk for the acid to rise up into the esophagus, causing the acid reflux.
There it is advised to try and maintain a healthy weight and stay somewhere close to the BMI index of your body.

2. What foods to avoid acid reflux

There are certain foods that are much more likely to trigger the acid reflux in the body. Foods such as:
·        Foods with high saturated fat
·        Greasy foods
·        Fast foods
·        Tomato-based products
·        Fried foods
·        Citrus foods
·        Carbonated drinks
·        Caffeine
·        Cocoa-based foods
·        Chocolate
·        Onions
·        Mint
·        Garlic
·        Alcohol

These are some of the foods that can trigger the symptoms of acid reflux. Therefore, it is best to take them off your Best Acid Reflux Diet Plan.

3. Eat a little, sit up a little longer

Eating smaller meals but a number of meals are a better diet plan to keep the stomach acid in check. It will ensure that you don't go too hungry, which would result in the production of more acid in your stomach, neither will you be too stuffed that might push the acid up the esophagus.

Further, keeping the fat and calories in check, it would also help you to regularise your weight which will further help in reducing the chances of GERD.

4. Eat foods that help

There are many foods that aid in fighting against the GERD. Foods such as noncitrus fruits, fiber-rich foods, and grains, green vegetables are foods that will help you with the acid reflux. There are also various herbs that can help you against the GERD, like chamomile, licorice, slippery elm etc. However, there is no conclusive evidence whether these herbs actually help or not, therefore try and test yourself to see their effectiveness.

5. Quit smoking and alcohol

Smoking damages the esophagus and thus can weaken the lower esophageal sphincter which prevents the acid from rising up. Alcohol further triggers the acid and causes it to move up. Hence, letting go of smoking and alcohol will greatly help towards fighting the GERD.

You don't have to do all this alone. Before creating and starting your diet plan to fight GERD, it is best to consult a doctor and a dietician who can help you chart out a strategy that would help you prevent acid reflux.
