10 Tips To Get You Aboard The Autumn Fitness Train

As summer winds to a close we could all be forgiven for losing enthusiasm with our beach body workouts and ruthless zero-carb diets. Layers are coming back into fashion and you've traded those bum-skimming hot pants for jeans and a jumper. It’s difficult to stay motivated as the days grow darker but as gym attendance reaches an annual low, now is a better time than ever to kick start a new healthy routine. Here are a few tips to fire up your enthusiasm.

Make A New Playlist

Repetition breeds familiarity, and familiarity breeds contempt. If you repeatedly use the same song when doing an ab workout, that song will become synonymous with sweating, struggling, and general indignation. Switch up your playlist to keep things fresh before the sound of Bieber brings you out in a cold sweat (if it didn't already).

2

Phone A Friend

We all have days when we're keen to get a sweat on, and days when we just want to put a sweater on and hide in a hole. By working out with a friend you double your chances of making it to the gym, which is often half the battle. You'll motivate them to work out on the days when they don't want to and visa versa. So partner up to make the most of your membership.

3

Look The Part

Confidence is key to enthusiasm. You're probably not feeling at your best when wearing baggy grey sweat pants and that faded old t-shirt you got for that work training day 10 years ago, so you probably won't perform your best. Kit yourself out with some comfortable (and confidence boosting) active wear to give yourself a boost.

4

Make The Most Of A Few Spare Minutes

Whether it's stopping to do 5 stair runs between going to grab your jumper from upstairs, or tensing your glutes during a long lecture (something I like to call lecturesise), there's always small ways to sneak more exercise into your day to day. Try setting yourself ad-break exercises during your favorite TV shows, squats are perfect as they don't require much space!

5

Join The Club

From Park Run to Zumba, there are clubs for every sport imaginable available across the UK. Why does it benefit to suffer publicly? The pressure of the group motivates you to work your hardest while the support of the group makes you enjoy what would usually be considered mild torture. (Plus the occasional gorgeous instructor is always an added bonus.)

6

Make A Look Book

As the year creeps on it will get colder, and darker, and colder, and a bit darker... so it's always good to have a little book of inspiration to keep you going when the weather is less than inspiring. It can contain anything that makes you feel energized - women, men, recipes, clothes, quotes. Just try to avoid any photos of large cakes because that (strangely) seems to be counter productive.

7

Get Technical

Apps have officially taken over the world, so it's not surprising there is a wealth of them designed to help you get into shape. Many are even free and range from food diaries to workout plans to cover every element of your transformation. So if you're a technophobe it's time to get with the times, because these miniature personal trainers could be exactly the boost you need.

8

The + 5 Rule

Did I say you could stop?! The best way to structure a workout is to set yourself targets. Twenty minutes on the treadmill, twenty five sit ups, 10 burpees... It seems daunting at the start but when you're at the end a satisfied feeling of achievement washes over your sweaty self. For increased results follow the + 5 rule and once you've reached your target challenge yourself to 5 more! 5 more minutes of jogging or five more sit ups than you ever would have thought possible at the start. You'll be surprised by what you can achieve!

9

Step Away From The Supermarket!

It's no secret that supermarkets line the end of their shelves like a delicious highway to heaven. The more time spent in the supermarket - the higher your chances of succumbing to pleasurable junk foods. Set yourself the challenge of shopping less and using those dregs in the cupboard before you buy more. You could save money, lose weight, and prevent food waste!

10

Get Real

Rome wasn't build in a day, and neither were Kayla Itsines' abs. Any workout program needs time and dedication before it can take effect. Make small changes to your lifestyle that you're realistically likely to stick to. Rather than cutting out carbs completely (a distressing concept for most) switch to tasty wholegrain alternatives. Don't feel you have to stop enjoying a glass of wine or an evening out in order to switch to a healthy lifestyle, you'll never stick at it if you're miserable!
