This Monday, President Trump confirmed that he would not be pursing a push to raise the minimum age requirement for purchasing assault-type firearms. This comes after making an earlier pledge to pursue it during his televised meeting with representatives from both sides of the aisle after the massacre in South Florida.
During that same meeting President Trump also suggested that law enforcement should “Take the guns first, go through due process second,” when dealing with people that could pose a danger to others, like the shooter in Parkland. Trump took to Twitter to walk back his pledge by noting that he's "watching court cases and rulings before acting."
Mr. Trump continued on Twitter by saying that "States are making this decision. Things are moving rapidly on this, but not much political support (to put it mildly)."
The reversal comes after President Trump met with NRA representatives. That said, the White House it still moving forward with its plan to strengthen the background check program as well as the banning on the sale and use of bump stock.
The White House is also pushing forward with its plan to arm trained teachers and is planning to set aside federal funding to help pay for the costs of such a program. The intention is for the administration to partner with local officials to provide “rigorous firearms training” to school personal.
