This morning, the White House signaled that President Trump would be open to supporting efforts on a bipartisan nature to revise federal background checks for future gun buyers.
After the massacre in Parkland, President Trump has become open to the idea of changes, but the White House did not give a clear signal that the president would fully commit to a bill making changes.
White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders stated that discussions are ongoing with regards to the current gun debate, but that “the president is supportive of efforts to improve the federal background check system.”
The new bill, proposed by a coalition of four Republicans and four Democrats in the Senate, looks to make big changes to the current federal background check system. One major change sees an initiative to better monitor those gun buyers with a history of domestic abuse.
Mr. Trump has held wavering views on gun control over the years. Under the time Rudolph W. Giuliani was mayor of New York, Mr. Trump held a concealed weapon permit. Trump also wrote in his 2000 book “The America We Deserve,” that “I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun.”
