President Trump’s top economic adviser, Gary Cohn, has announced plans to resign from his White House position. He is the latest high-profile departure from the Trump administration in the past few months. White House officials indicate that there is no single issue surrounding Mr. Cohn's departure, but the move comes as Chon is set to lose an internal White House struggle over Trump's sweeping tariffs plan.
President Trump released a statement regarding the departure where he stated that "Gary has been my chief economic adviser and did a superb job in driving our agenda, helping to deliver historic tax cuts and reforms and unleashing the American economy once again. He is a rare talent, and I thank him for his dedicated service to the American people."
This latest departure may have a ripple effect within the administration and beyond. Last year, when there were rumblings that Cohn might be stepping away from his position, the markets took a hit on the rumors alone. Those close to Mr. Cohn stated that he had plans to stay on-board with the administration for about a year, and that he had accomplished all that he wished.
Chief of staff John Kelly noted of Cohn that he would “miss having him as a partner in the White House, but he departs having made a real impact in the lives of the American people.”
