Law enforcement officials identified the shooter as James T. Hodgkinson of Illinois.

Hodgkinson, 66, was seen behind the dugout near third base, carrying a rifle.

Mr. Scalise, the majority whip of the House of Representatives, was standing on second base and was shot in the hip.

Two members of his Scalise's police detail exchanged gunfire with Hodgkinson and were wounded.

In a statement to reporters, President Donald Trump said the assailant had died.

In total, 5 individuals were shot by the Alexandria assailant.

Police reported that two of the five who were shot during the attack are critically wounded.
