How can you hate me when you don’t even know me? Throughout my life I have been looking for an answer to that.

Daryl Davis

Daryl Davis is a blues musician with incredible soul...

And on his free-time, a friend to various KKK members!

Although Daryl Davis disagrees with Klan members' views over race and white supremacy, that doesn't stop him from trying to form a friendship over mutual respect and understanding.

Over many decades, Davis has met and befriended several KKK members!

An Unfortunate Truth

Have you ever been the victim of racism?

Calculating results

We're going to ship you back to Africa. And all you Jews out there are going back to Israel ... If they don't leave voluntarily they will be exterminated in the coming race war.

Head of the American Nazi Party

KKK Members HATE anyone who isn't white or supportive!

So why does Davis insist on building a friendship with them?

Davis isn't ignorant to the fact that most KKK members find him repulsive or flat-out hate him...

But Davis also understands the power of conversation and finding familiar ground!

Despite the overwhelming obstacles that stands in Davis' way of building mutual respect and friendship, Davis continues his pursuit of understanding.

For Davis, the end goal isn't to sit around and simply talk about the problems of racism... but to actively do something about it. And, crack down on what he believes is the source of the problem.

Ignorance.

"The most important thing I learned is that when you are actively learning about someone else you are passively teaching them about yourself. So if you have an adversary with an opposing point of view, give that person a platform. Allow them to air that point of view, regardless of how extreme it may be. And believe me, I've heard things so extreme at these rallies they'll cut you to the bone.

Give them a platform.

You challenge them. But you don't challenge them rudely or violently. You do it politely and intelligently. And when you do things that way chances are they will reciprocate and give you a platform. So he and I would sit down and listen to one another over a period of time. And the cement that held his ideas together began to get cracks in it. And then it began to crumble. And then it fell apart."

Davis' collection of KKK robe and hood collection continues to grow!

After a friendship is established, many KKK members have called it quits and have gifted their hood and robe to Davis, as a sign of good faith!

It’s a wonderful thing when you see a light bulb pop on in their heads or they call you and tell you they are quitting.
