Atlético Madrid exit La Liga title race

We still do not know who the La Liga champions will be but we do know that it will not be Atlético Madrid. Travelling to Levante has proven to be a difficult task for Atlético who have not won at the Ciutat de Valencia stadium since 2007, when Diego Forlán scored the only goal for the Colchoneros. Even still, Diego Simeone could have been forgiven for expecting to leave there with three points and a smile on his face since Levante are already relegated and have nothing to play for. That was not the case, however. Atlético took the lead through Fernando Torres before Victor Casadesus equalised and Giuseppe Rossi grabbed the winner for Levante in stoppage time. With one game to play and Atlético three points behind after Barcelona and Real Madrid both recorded wins, Simeone and his squad must say so long to the league title.

Pep to get a taste of the Europa League

Can you picture Pep Guardiola managing a team in the Europa League? Well, that could happen next season. It would be odd, to say the least, but if Manchester United win their two remaining matches against West Ham and Bournemouth, this crazy thought will turn out to be true. The 2-2 draw between City and Arsenal on Sunday was bad news for both teams but Manuel Pellegrini's side really got the short end of the stick as it leaves them liable to be overtaken by their fiercest rivals. On the last day of the season, they’re travelling to Wales to play Swansea, a team who have six points and seven goals from their last two games against Liverpool and West Ham. Well, at least City's presence would mean the media will probably pay more attention to the Europa League, a competition that, lately, has been bringing more excitement to the game than the Champions League.

Stuttgart need a miracle to avoid relegation

Five losses in a row have seen Stuttgart plummet down the Bundesliga table and towards what could be the second relegation in the history of the club. After the latest loss, the fans let their feelings be known, invading the pitch following the 3-1 home defeat to Mainz and demanding answers. The players took it upon themselves to calm them down, temporarily at least, but those same players have just one final chance this season to give the supporters what they want. It is not going to be easy, however. Stuttgart need to defeat Wolfsburg and hope that other results go their way if they are to avoid the drop. It is looking bleak for one of Germany’s Traditionsvereine.

Lyon settle into second place in Ligue 1

Barring a comeback of Liverpool-in-Istanbul proportions, Lyon have almost certainly laid claim to second place in Ligue 1 after thrashing Monaco 6-1 at the Stade des Lumières on Saturday. Tied on 62 points before the game, Lyon have now put a three-point and 22-goal cushion between themselves and Les Rouges et Blancs with one game left to play. That game is against Reims who are second from bottom, have picked up just three points from their last six games and who Lyon have already beaten this season. In other good news for Lyon (and France), Alexandre Lacazette continued his upswing in form as he scored a hat-trick – that's eight goals in nine games – to give Didier Deschamps a welcome selection headache ahead of the Euros.

Italy has a youth problem

This Italian season has seemingly convinced every football fan that this sport does not care about age. In his last official game, a 38-year-old Luca Toni scored and helped his Verona side to register Juventus' first defeat in Serie A since late October. Meanwhile, in Rome, that 39-year-old wonder-kid called Francesco Totti celebrated his 600th game by providing a perfect assist to Miralem Pjanic and helping Roma stay in the race for second. But if these stories are touching the football world, they are also a bad news for Italy. They show a country that is slowing loosing its best players without finding replacements of the same quality.
