Why Do Dogs Eat Grass Most of the Time?

It is surprising to see dogs eating grass or chewing on plants. I am quite sure; your beloved canine companion clearly isn’t a cow. There is various hypotheses claiming that dog eats grass to get nutrients missing in their diet. However, the fact is that dogs cannot digest the cellulose in grass and so it overturns the hypothesis.

The sheepadoodle puppy is no exception to such instances. Pica is the technical term for the behaviour characterized by eating things that aren’t actually their food. This is a common scenario and it also happens with a healthy sheepadoodle puppy. Sometimes pica is an indication that the dog is having a type of nutritional deficiency. There is some section of people who believe that dogs eat strange things as grass to stimulate vomiting or diarrhoea. However, this theory is undermined by the fact that most dogs do not act ill before eating grass. And besides, most dogs that eat grass don’t vomit at all.

Some other theories as to why dog eat grass are- the dog might be bored, it is a common sight that dogs chew things frequently when they are bored. Some other theories believed that the dog’s diet might be missing something. Perhaps, when the dogs are fed on home-prepared foods and diet, it is also possible that they are missing some key nutrient. In an even extreme scenario, when the dog is given supplement diet with veterinarian approved vitamins, it becomes improbable that they are lacking anything found in grass.

For your information, dogs are truly omnivore. They can eat both meat and plant material. Dogs eating grass is quite common and has been observed in wild dogs. This form of pica does not usually cause too many problems. It’s just surprising to see a canine companion going veggie. Most veterinarians also considers such behaviour normal. However, though it may sound normal, it can be deadly as well provided if the dog ends up eating those grass and plant sprayed with toxic chemicals and fertilizers. So long as the grass is untreated and you don’t allow your dog to become an obsessive behaviour, it will do no harm. The best thing would be if you notice your dog with this behaviour, it best to feed fresh fruits.
