It's happened. After weeks, months - actually, YEARS - of speculation, Arsene Wenger has finally confirmed that he is to step down as Arsenal manager at the end of this season.

The Frenchman has been on the receiving end of abuse, criticism and stick from a large section of his team's own supporters for what feels like forever. Now, he has finally decided the time has come for him to sail off into the sunset.

While there will be some eternally angry Arsenal fans who will be claim they are glad to see the back of him, the vast majority of Gooners will be sad to see the most successful manager in their club's history leave the Emirates for the last time.

After all, for many of those supporters, Wenger has been in charge of their club for most of their lives. Wenger took charge in October 1996 - a massive 21.5 years ago.

And the world has become a significantly different place in that time. Here's a reminder of just how massively things have changed since Wenger first came to London…

1

In October 1996, Donald Trump was just about to buy the Miss Universe Organisation, and now he's the leader of the free world

2

Including caretakers, Chelsea have had 16 different managers since October 1996 (and Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink did it twice)

3

A Premier League player's average salary was £130,000 a year in 1996, compared to £2,438,275 a year today. Yikes.

4

None of the other 19 managers who were in charge of Premier League teams in October 1996 are currently managing a club

5

Tiger Woods had only just taken up professional golf in October 1996

6

Hector Bellerin was two months old

7

There wasn't a single Starbucks in London. Their first one came three years later.

8

House prices in Islington have risen from an average £124,000 in 1996 to £644,275 today

9

The average price of a pint was £1.60. A decent one in London will cost you three times that these days.

Of the 20 clubs in this season's Premier League, half are now playing in a different home stadium to the one they were in in October 1996
