Shang Dynasty

The Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 - 1046 BCE), considered by many historians to be the first, set the foundation for Chinese culture. This dynasty is known for its political stability and thriving economy, allowing for cultural advances in a number of areas such as writing and religion. One of the Shang Dynasty’s most notable leaders, King Tang, began social programs for the poor and worked for his people, rather than his own pleasure. The Shang Dynasty proved to be resilient, suffering from famine a number of times, but still remained prosperous and grew under King Tang’s reign. Religion was also extremely important during the Shang Dynasty and a harmonious understanding of one’s place in the world.

During the Zhou Dynasty (1046 - 256 BCE), there was a period of intellectual and artistic awakening. One of the most notable leaders of the Zhou Dynasty, King Wen, was ambitious but never lost sight of his wisdom and benevolence.

This dynasty did not focus on arts or literature, going so far as to ban books to keep the population ignorant and unable to challenge authority. The Qin Dynasty, however, did create a standard bureaucratic government with many legalistic policies still in place in China today.

The Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), one of the longest lasting dynasties, is considered by many to be a golden age of arts, science, politics and technology. Economic growth and expansion of the empire were major features of the Han Dynasty. It was during this dynasty one of the greatest economic achievements was complete - the opening of the Silk Road. The Silk Road improved trade and made the nation a prosperous one while also allowing for a constant exchange of ideas across varying cultures. The Han Dynasty was an inventive one, resulting in several important contributions not only to China, but also to the rest of the world. The wheelbarrow, seismograph, the paper making process and cast iron processing can all be credited to the Han Dynasty.

The Sui Dynasty (581 - 618 CE), while brief in tenure, paved the way in many regards for its longer-lasting successors. The Sui Dynasty reunified China, saw government reform with less complex law codes and helped centralize the emperor’s authority. Both of the emperors during the Sui Dynasty were extremely ambitious and China’s territory expanded greatly. The Sui Dynasty was also known for its excessive spending and military blunders.

Gunpowder, air conditioning, mechanical clocks and printing are just some of the inventions credited to the Tang Dynasty. There were also great advancements in medicine, architecture, literature, science and technology during the Tang Dynasty. These inventions and advancements greatly improved the lives of the Chinese people and increased trade brought in even more new ideas and goods.

During the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279 BCE), there was a revival of the ideals of Confucianism, focusing on self-improvement. More of the country’s population moved into cities, but those who remained on farms became more efficient by growing cash crops such as sugar, tea, cotton, oranges and silk. There were extensive innovations in machinery and manufacturing, leading to industrial improvements and a booming economy. The Song Dynasty is also known for its love of literature. Encyclopedias, historical works and poetry all flourished during this dynasty.

During the Yuan Dynasty (1279 - 1368), China became part of the Mongol empire. There was less focus on literature, philosophy and culture. Instead, the preferred entertainment was music, feasts and parties. Dancing and acrobatics were added to popular forms of entertainment and major theatrical works were written in the common vernacular. The Yuan Dynasty wasn’t all one big party, however. The Bubonic Plague ravaged the empire during the Yuan Dynasty, killing millions in one province alone.

The Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) saw the perfection of the civil service system with the development of a separate office designed to investigate misconduct and corruption. The Ming Dynasty had several interactions with foreign entities, but any cultural developments during the dynasty would largely be classified as conservative and inward-looking. During this dynasty there was a period of intellectual, political and economic sterility. There were, however, great achievements in the areas of painting and pottery – particularly in ornamental carvings that showed a great deal of workmanship.

There were several military defeats during the Qing Dynasty, including the first Opium War, Anglo-French War, the Sino-Japanese War and the Boxer Rebellion. All of these defeats led to China having to grant major concessions to foreign entities. During the Qing Dynasty, there was a great focus on past traditions and a more conservative attitude.
