Pet Teams in South Mississippi have cause to celebrate!

The graduating canine class of South Mississippi will soon be spending their time visiting students at nearby colleges and universities, or comforting vast amounts of people in hospitals, retirement homes, and hospice care.

Why?

Because for many years, therapy dogs have been found to help ease anxiety and stress levels due to a canine's calm demeanor, gentle disposition, and friendliness to strangers.

Our mission is to enhance lives, people need our dogs and we need more dogs.

The use of therapy dogs first started with Elaine Smith, a registered nurse. Smith noticed a significant improvement in patients mood and overall health when visited by a friend's golden retriever.
In 1976, Smith started a program to train dogs in order to visit institutions, such as schools, hospitals, and nursing homes.
In addition to assisting the physically impaired, therapy dogs can also help children suffering with autism or severe anxiety disorders.
Additionally, therapy dogs allow children with autism or severe anxiety disorders to have increased social interactions with less stress.
Rescue groups often give strays a second chance by training them to fulfill a position as a therapy dog.

Thanks to proper training from the organization, Visiting Pet Teams of South Mississippi, many more dogs will be joining the force to help make essential visits!
