Jack Gleeson was congratulated on being hated.

George R. R. Martin apparently sent a letter to the young actor now best known for playing the rather detestable Joffrey congratulating him on being so convincingly hate-worthy.

2

Maester Aemon Targaryen is actually a bit blind.

Peter Vaughn, the actor that plays the member of the Night's Watch is actually legally partially blind.

3

There's a Lord of the Rings easter egg in the show.

The Iron Throne actually contains a replica of Gandalf's sword from the LOTR and the Hobbit films.

4

Dany almost had the purple eyes the book described.

Emilia Clarke tried to wear violet contacts in order to appear even more like the Mother of Dragons the book describes, but it was very difficult for her and actually affected her performance.

5

The Mountain is not the tallest of the Game of Thrones characters.

Hodor (Kristian Nairn) is actually 1.5 inches taller than the 6'9" Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who plays The Mountain.

6

Originally, there was a rule of "no prophecies, dreams or flashbacks" on the show.

All three of those rules have since been broken.

7

The very-brunette Emilia Clarke has never dyed her hair.

Dany's white-blond hair is constructed through a rather elaborate wig-and-makeup procedure, which is rather impressive considering just how realistic her character's hairline looks.

8

Natalie Dormer loved to be surprised.

As a true fan of the show as well as a cast member, she'd only read enough of the script to fully encompass her role in each episode, so she'd still enjoy the show when it aired.

9

The War of the Five Kings is based a bit in history.

A lot of the battle and brother-on-brother warfare was inspired by the War of the Roses in 15th century England.

10

Some romantic entanglements created some difficulties on the set.

Lena Headey (Cersei) and Jerome Flynn (Bronn) went through a breakup that left them on horrible terms so it was written into their contracts that they would not have to film any scenes together.

11

The first season premiered on a rather special day.

The show's true premiere was on Sean Bean's birthday!

12

Jon Snow may have looked quite differently...

Iwan Rheon (Ramsey Snow/Bolton) was originally very much in the running to play Jon Snow before the role went to Kit Harrington.

13

The series' cast contains only two American actors.

Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) was born in Hawaii and Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) was born in New Jersey.

14

The Lannisters could have been a bit more X-Files-ish.

Gillian Anderson (of X-Files fame portraying Dana Scully) turned down the role of Cersei Lannister due to having two young children at the time.

15

Peter Dinklage has racked up an impressive amount of Emmy nods.

His work as Tyrion Lannister has been nominated every season for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

16

One king is never truly on the throne.

Robert Baratheon is never shown seated on the Iron Throne.

17

Sean Bean had a bit of fun post-Ned Stark.

Apparently, the actor played football with the replica of his decapitated character's head.
