The ideal family was simply the ones that followed the American Dream. (For a man) This involves a wife who takes care of the household needs, a house in the suburbs, two children, and two cars.

The man of the family was expected to work and provide for his family. If he didn't, who would get the money for the house, the wife?

The one time that a man would cook is a barbecue in the 50's. It was a time to invite neighbors and friends to have fun and eat up!

The man of the family is the control freak of the house. He sets the rules and brings order to each family member. Nothing passes them without their approval.

When stressed out, it was really endorsed for men to smoke for relief. At most times, it was to just smoke. All you would see on T.V. were cigarette and tobacco ads.

Overall, sports defined the man. If you were male and didn't like sports, you were an outcast. They would come up in conversations. There would be a night with the family to sit in front of the t.v to watch football and baseball games.
