What is the Chikungunya Virus?

The Chikungunya Virus is a disease that can be transmitted by animals or insects. Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease first described during an outbreak in southern Tanzania in 1952. It is an RNA virus that belongs to the Alphavirus genus of the family Togaviridae. The name “chikungunya” comes from a word in the Kimakonde (a language by an ethnic group in Tarzania) language, meaning “to become contorted”, and describes the stooped appearance of sufferers with joint pain. There is no cure for this disease just treatment for relieving the pain it causes. Usually in places like Africa, Asia, etc...
