"Debenhams to punish security officer who soaked homeless man while sleeping" (14,000 signatures)

Homeless man Russell Allen took to Facebook to complain that a security guard at Debenhams in Commercial Road had poured water over his bedding while he slept outside the store on Boxing Day.
The store apologised, claiming that the bedding had been soaked accidentally, but readers still took to social media to attack the shop's owners.
A petition was set up asking for the store to punish the security guard involved.

What happened: Crowdfunding pages have been set up online to try and get Russell back on his feet, but Debenhams have been silent as far as the security guard is concerned.

"Bring back shipbuilding to Portsmouth" (90 signatures)

Navy lovers called on Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt to help bring back the shipbuilding industry to the city and create new jobs at the same time.
The last remaining shipbuilding operation in Portsmouth was closed in 2014, and there have been worries about the size of the Royal Navy's fleet over the coming years.

What happened: A new government report in November suggested that shipbuilding in the UK should be shared among companies and cities so shipyards can win work and create jobs. So watch this space to see if Portsmouth is included.

3

"Keep Portsmouth's Central Police Station open" (400 signatures)

More than 400 people, backed by Portsmouth councillors, urged Hampshire Constabulary to reconsider proposals to shut the central police station in favour of a new 'super' police hub.
The petition said as crime increases in the city, there was worry that there will be less visible police patrols on the street.

What happened: Unfortunately the petition does not seem to have gained any traction, as the station is set to close later this year when the new station opens in Airport Service Road.

4

"Stop the University of Portsmouth offering 20 Syrian refugees a scholarship" (1,000 signatures)

Last year two separate campaigns were launched speaking for and against the idea of the University of Portsmouth offering scholarships to Syrian refugees.
Luke Freeman, a politics student at Portsmouth, told The News at the time that the scheme would bring 'no real benefit' to the university, city or students.

What happened: A University of Portsmouth spokeswoman said that there were no plans to give out the scholarships, and added that the university doesn't distinguish between refugees and British students.

5

"Say No to a red and white Spinnaker Tower" (9,300 signatures)

There was uproar in June 2015 when proposals were put forward to paint Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower red and white as part of its rebranding.
As people pointed out, the colours would have been very similar to that worn by a rival football team down the road and called on the city council to change their minds.

What happened: It worked! After more than 9,000 people signed the online petition the council backed down and agreed to paint the tower blue, white and gold - perhaps a better reflection of the city.

6

"Mike Tyson is not welcome in Portsmouth" (3,190 signatures)

The Portsmouth Cultural Trust faced the wrath of protesters in July 2012 after former boxing champion Mike Tyson was invited to speak at the city's Guildhall.
The petition, set up by domestic and sexual violence support charity Aurora New Dawn, pointed out that Tyson had been convicted for raping an 18-year-old woman in 1992.

What happened: Another success! The Trust confirmed they had cancelled Tyson's appearance after learning of previous controversial comments made by the boxer.

7

"Ban John Anthony Portsmouth Football Club Westwood from entering football grounds with his bell" (32 supporters)

John Anthony Portsmouth Football Club Westwood is like Marmite - you either love him or you hate him. And it seems the 32 Pompey supporters that signed this petition definitely fell under the latter.
Westwood has become one of the most recognisable characters at Fratton Park with his numerous tattoos and football accessories.

What happened: Westwood has remained a controversial figure at Fratton Park, but despite more concerns from supporters he remains a frequent visitor to Pompey matches - with his bell of course.

8

"Remove 'rape apologist' CeeLo Green from Mutiny Festival line-up" (66 signatures)

Last year singer CeeLo Green was named as one of Mutiny Festival's headline act, but the decision was met by protest online.
Feminist group Sisters Uncut Portsmouth started the petition and commented how in 2013 the singer had been accused of drugging and raping a woman, before tweeting what they called 'blatant excuses for rape and sexual violence'.

What happened: There was no change to the festival's line-up, and CeeLo performed as promised in May last year.

9

"Call for Tyler Smith to have his Pompey season ticket returned and ban lifted" (980 signatures)

Pompey fan Tyler Smith landed himself in trouble after running on to the pitch during a game at Fratton Park in November 2015 and taking a goal kick.
The 21-year-old, from Waterlooville, had acted as fans were frustrated with York City keeper Scott Flinders.
Tyler's season ticket was later confiscated and fans started a petition, asking the club to return it.

What happened: Nearly 1,000 people signed the petition, but the club refused to give back his season ticket.

"Support for Lyndon Strong, headteacher at St Mary's Roman Catholic School in Gosport" (450 supporters)

Parents in St Mary's were left angry after their headteacher was forced to resign from his post in December after being remarried.
Mr Strong was a hugely popular figure at the school but was told he would have to leave at the end of term. Parents set up an online petition to try to keep him.

What happened: Unfortunately despite their pleas Mr Strong left the school before Christmas, with tributes being paid to him by teachers and Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage.
