Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald

The third generation of Pokemon games revolutionized the series as we know it. These games included a new richness and depth to its visual style that could only be done on the more powerful GBA, as well as added massive additions to the game mechanics, such as contests, natures, and a plethora of post game options. These games proved to be incredibly engaging and offered hours of new and exciting gameplay.

Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island

This title is one of the most visually appealing and unique games ever. With its pop-up storybook aesthetic and pastel platforms, this game is both a challenge and delight that keeps the player engaged and smiling the whole time through.

3

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

One of the Zelda series' most underrated titles found its way onto this list due to its perfect balance of classic Zelda dungeon gameplay and exciting new features that keep the player engaged for hours. It feels like playing A Link to the Past but with whole new worlds to explore thanks to Link's ability to shrink and explore the tiny world of the Picori.

4

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror

This game puts a spin on the usual sidescrolling Kirby gameplay by structuring the levels with a maze layout. The freedom to explore and clear different worlds while solving puzzles, defeating enemies, and collecting items makes this a captivating game and on the top 10.

5

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

It was really hard to not put all the Super Mario Advance titles on this list, but this is one of the best. This remastered version of Super Mario Bros. 3 offered the player new items, levels, developer playthrough, and gameplay elements through the help of an e-Reader extension, but even on its own it was jam packed full of wildly fun levels.

6

Sonic Advance

This is one of the best 16 bit games out there. Smooth animation and defined character sprites find their groove in the perfect balance of speed we all love Sonic games for. The music mixes provided the perfect backdrop for all the spring jumps and rail grinds you could ever hope for. This game also featured a fan favorite minigame, a portable Chao garden, where you could connect to GameCube Sonic games and continue raising your favorite virtual pets.

7

Metroid Fusion

Fans of the classic Metroid games will love this title. An X-parasite infection early on in the story forces doctors to fuse her DNA with the baby Metroid’s. This grants her the ability to absorb parasites after destroying their host bodies, which in turn is key to earning new abilities. One of the most thrilling plaformer/shooter games in the GBA lineup for sure.

8

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past & Four Swords

This vibrant port of the SNES classic did not disappoint. This title both remastered what is one of the best 2D Zelda games out there and added an entirely new multiplayer mode, Four Swords. Multiplayer is practically unheard of in the realm of the Zelda series, so a 4 player puzzle solving adventure was revolutionary, not to mention super fun to play with all your friends.

9

Mega Man Zero

This darker series reboot was set a full century after the Mega Man X series, with an amnesiac Zero fighting alongside a resistance group in a post-apocalyptic, robot-filled hellscape. Fans of the traditional Mega Man side scrolling style will be pleased but not bored as they find new features like level scaled weaponry and Cyber-elves that enhance Zero's abilities.

10

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow

As, essentially, a reformed Dracula, Soma brought a unique approach to the action, in that he gained new powers and attacks by absorbing the souls of defeated enemies. The GBA's technology finally caught up to the needs of the series and perfectly executed the stunning visuals and engaging characters in a way that was yet to be achieved before Aria of Sorrow.
