5 Things to Look for in a Place to Buy Chameleons

Buying a pet is a big deal. You want an animal that will last several years, however long their intended lifespan is. You certainly don’t want to purchase it, get your home setup for it, and have it be sickly and die prematurely. That will be emotionally difficult, not to mention expensive and a waste of a lot of time and energy. How disappointing!

If you want to avoid a lot of negative feeling after you buy your next reptile pet, only buy chameleons from a place that checks off all of these boxes:

#1 Their website is professionally done. A professional, clean, and informative website says a lot about a business. It means they are in it for the long haul! Only a licensed and competent company will have a nice website that Google sends traffic to. You don’t want to get your lizard from a place that isn’t reputable or doesn’t want authorities knowing what they are selling.

#2 It has a physical store. A good website is important, but you also want a place with a physical store. The address and phone number should be listed on their website, maybe at the bottom, or on the “About Us” or “Contact Us” page. This will eliminate buying a chameleon out of someone’s garage or another less-than-legal spot.

#3 Shop a local small business. A small business, even if it isn’t local to your city and state, is a better choice than a big retail chain. Local shops are more likely to have healthy animals and often stock higher-quality products to go along with your new chameleon. They are also more likely to pay attention to you as an individual customer and to be familiar with your lizard, your habitat, and your needs.

#4 They specialize in reptiles. Reptiles are often very high-maintenance animals and typically require highly-specialized housing and food. You need to speak with someone who knows all about it. Reptiles, including chameleons, rarely do well in high-stress or high-activity environments, such as a pet store that also has dogs barking and birds squawking.

#5 They have more than just chameleons. You want to only purchase your chameleon from a place with a variety of other healthy reptiles. This shows their dedicated to the industry. You could be able to buy bearded dragons, geckos, and even snakes there as well.

It may seem difficult to find a store that meets all of these requirements, but it is not. When you have a happy and healthy chameleon for years to come, you will be happy that you took the time to shop at the right location.
