The name Stoffel Vandoorne is well known around motorsport having claimed the GP2 Series title in 2015 and breaking on to the F1 scene in the 2016 Bahrain Grand Prix stepping in for the injured Fernando Alonso and scoring points on his debut.

Vandoorne has chosen to race in F1 with the number #2, but really wanted number #7 after winning the 2012 Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup title with that number. Unfortunately, a certain Kimi Raikkonen has already locked down that number.

In a recent interview, Stoffel confessed he hasn't go a racing hero.

“I never really looked up to anyone. I always had huge respect for anyone in Formula 1, and the drivers around, because it’s a competitive world and it is very difficult to get into. But when I was a kid, I never really had posters in my room.”

He had a humble beginning

Born in Kortrijk, in 1992, Vandoorne began his motorsport career aged six and won his first race and championship in the national karting series. He was selected by the Royal Belgian Automobile Club as an award winner to get into higher level competition in his mid-late teens. He received no major funding before joining McLaren and doesn’t come from a motorsport family. His dad is an architect.

Vandoorne became the first reserve driver to score points on debut since the German at the 2007 United States Grand Prix.
