The words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr continue to inspire us year after year. His messages about justice, freedom, peace, and doing good speak to our hearts and our souls.

King was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929 and like his father before him, he was a Baptist minister, a man of great faith, and a man of great vision who later became the face of the civil rights movement.

Growing up in the racially segregated south, King experienced racism at a young age, which led to his life of activism. After graduating with a doctorate in theology, he became a pastor in Alabama and became involved with the fledgling civil rights movement.

King took part in the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and in 1957 he became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and began a series of peaceful nonviolent protests in Birmingham Alabama. During the 1963 March on Washington where he gave his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech that would eventually lead to a change in the laws dealing with the inequality of African Americans.

On April 4, 1968, King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee; he was only 39 years old. His life may have ended but his lifework and his legacy are still with us.
