Trump may not have approval from Congress to build the border wall yet, but that hasn't stopped him from accepting proposals for its design already, of which at least four have already been submitted by various companies.
The requirements for companies whose bids are chosen to create a prototype are as follows:
- A security plan with details including 'fall back positions, evacuation routines and methods, muster area, medical staff members/availability, number of security personnel, qualifications, years of experience, etc. in the event of a hostile attack,'
- A chain-link fence with barbed wire around the construction site is required.
- Demonstrated experience 'executing high-profile, high-visibility and politically contentious' projects.
- Prototypes should be about 30 feet (9 meters) long and 18 to 30 feet (5.5 to 9 meters) high.
These requirements are reflective of the amount of protest and opposition the construction companies are likely already dealing with. Some have already received threats of varying degrees of severity. According to Robert Colburn, Former Border Patrol Deputy Chief:
Most of those organizations are probably fairly accustomed to that. Some of them may be learning for the first time, that kind of risk at the borders.
