First men on the moon – 1969
Undoubtedly one of the most memorable moments in NASA’s history was when American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin on flight Apollo 11 became the first people to walk on the Moon – the first time anyone had stepped foot on another planet other than Earth! Armstrong famously described the event as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Venera 7 lands on Venus - 1970
The Venera 7 spacecraft was one of a series of probes sent by the Soviets in the 1960s and 1970s to land on planet Venus. After many failed attempts, Venera 7 successfully landed on 15th December 1970, making it the first spacecraft to return data back to Earth after landing on another planet - even if it only lasted 23 minutes on the surface!
The Mars Rover – 1997
On 4th July 1997, NASA began its first successful exploration of Mars, launching a six-wheeled rover called Sojourner to gather scientific data and search for life on the planet. Since then, eight other NASA robots have reached Mars, and five of them still remain active on the planet today!
