According to the person driving a truck full of red skittles that fell out and coated the road last week due to rain dissolving their container, the candy, which was all red and did not feature the standard skittles "S" stamp, was bound for a farm to become part of cattle feed.
Skittles becoming part of cattle feed is not uncommon. Mars often sells imperfect candies to other distributors that will incorporate it into or liquify it for use in food for livestock. These particular skittles were unable to be stamped due to a power outage and should have been bound for one such destination. What makes this particular case confusing is that the whole skittles were on their way directly to a farm, which is not how Mars operates.
According to the Mars, the company itself is still confused about the incident.
We don't know how it ended up as it did, and we are investigating.
