Are you from Lakeland?
Raney
Yes, I am actually a 5th generation Lakelander.
Trevor
What inspired you to start your own business?
Raney
I have never enjoyed shopping at traditional stores, and I didn't like to blend in...I'm quirky and I wanted to be myself with my own style. I don't believe in complicated clothing, I like it simple and I like it to represent who I am.
Trevor
What is your favorite part of making your clothing?
Raney
I am in control of every piece. From the fabric I use, the cut, the design, the finish, I get to create my own unique article of clothing. It helps me stick to my branding.
Trevor
Where do you find your clothing inspirations?
Raney
I am actually really into architecture and abstract art. I get a lot of my inspiration from Clyfford Still and his beautiful abstract paintings. Most of my pieces are movement based, so kinetic energy is a focal point of the clothing. If it doesn't move with you or drape over the body, then it probably isn't my style.
Trevor
How did you find your style?
Raney
I tried to fit a mold in college that wasn't really who I was. About 6 months after graduation I was working in an office and my former boss sat down with me and told me I was too creative to be working in an office space, and we talked about how I could be myself and grow as an individual. That small meeting helped me decide that I needed to start living my own life and led me to start Rane Made. I have been living my best life and found my style by just being myself and surrounding myself with positive people.
Trevor
Where do you get your materials from?
Raney
I started off at bigger stores buying things in bulk and just playing around with materials and stitchings to figure out my own directions. Now I usually get specific items from different companies because they all specialize in different colors, materials, etc.
Trevor
What is your favorite article of clothing to make?
Raney
I enjoy making The Molly Romper.
Trevor
Hardest part of being your own boss?
Raney
Customer service. You have to take full responsibility for every situation and it can be a lot to handle sometimes. No matter what situation, I still wouldn't trade it for the world.
Trevor
Future plans for Rane Made?
Raney
I am currently in the works of getting a new office space to be more accessible for clients so they have a place where they can come get fitted for clothing or try something on.
Trevor
Any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Raney
Be yourself. Once you find your brand, stick with it.
Trevor
Favorite book?
Raney
When I read for fun my favorite is, And Then There Were None, but my favorite book that helped me with Rane Made is Business for Bohemians.
Trevor
Favorite TV series?
Raney
The Office.
Trevor
Pen or pencil?
Raney
Pen.
Trevor
Chocolate or Vanilla?
Raney
Chocolate.
Trevor
What are some things you cannot live without?
Raney
My glasses, I would be blind without them.
Raney
Also coffee and my calendar are essentials as well.
Trevor
Sweater weather or beach days?
Raney
This is tough, but I would say beach days. Honestly, it's about a seventy - thirty split in favor of beach days.
Trevor
Would you consider yourself an organized person?
Raney
Yes! I am extremely organized. I even planned my whole wedding and had everything ready to go for the people who were helping me out. That's when I decided I was an organized person.
Trevor
If you could have one superpower, which one and why?
Raney
I would like to be able to read people's minds. I think people are weird and I love it.
Trevor
Biggest pet peeve?
Raney
When people don't use their turn signals!
Trevor
Why Lakeland?
Raney
Being a 5th generation Lakelander, I thought that I wanted to leave and start somewhere else. I ended up going to Southeastern University because I love my family and couldn't be without them. So I started Rane Made here in Lakeland and I never realized how supportive the Lakeland community is, especially the team at Catapult. I would not have been able to be as successful as I have without this community backing me up and giving me the encouragement I need to pursue what I love.
Trevor
