Punished "Venom" Snake

Punished "Venom" Snake

*SPOILER WARNING*

Big Boss, real name John, also known as Jack, and formerly known as Vic Boss, Naked Snake, Punished Snake, Venom Snake, or simply Snake, was a renowned special forces operative and mercenary commander. He founded U.S. Army Special Forces Unit FOXHOUND, along with the mercenary companies Militaires Sans Frontières and Diamond Dogs, and was one of the founding members of the Patriots. Big Boss later established the military states of Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land as bases for his companies, in order to realize his ambitions of creating a nation for soldiers. He was considered by many to be "The Greatest Warrior of the 20th Century" and a brilliant military leader, hailed as a hero by his admirers and feared as a tyrant by his enemies.

During the Cold War, Big Boss was an apprentice to The Boss, the so-called "Mother of Special Forces," and later served as a black ops field agent for the CIA's FOX Unit, under Major Zero.

Having his genetic code used as part of the government project Les Enfants Terribles, Big Boss was the genetic father of Solid Snake (his subordinate and later nemesis), Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake.

ig Boss also never wanted, or saw, Solid Snake as his son but confessed that he had always respected him as a soldier and a man, yet he believed that unlike Liquid or Solidus, Solid Snake always fought for more than himself, as The Boss always did, while Liquid and Solidus were almost completely obsessed with either living up to Big Boss's legend or surpassing him by creating their own versions of Outer Heaven, Solid Snake never sought a reason to rebel against his government superiors by threatening mass murder despite the same kinds of deceptions and manipulations not unlike the ones Big Boss had suffered. After being liberated from induced comatose by FOXALIVE, Big Boss saw how Solid Snake remained similar to the soldier Naked Snake was during Operation Snake Eater since Zanzibar. He realized his son was perhaps the better man who could have done things differently in 1964. The Snake who truly surpassed Big Boss was not Liquid or Solidus but Solid Snake.

While the original intention of the Les Enfant Terribles project was having Big Boss's genetic replacements ready and preserving the soldier genes to create human weapons, Solid Snake inherited more than just the genes or the skills of his father. Loyalty, selflessness, courage along with all the other admirable traits that made Big Boss the legendary soldier held Solid Snake steadfast against danger, accusations, loss of comrades, and his own failing body. When the conflict between Cipher and Big Boss became uncontrollably out of proportion, it was Solid Snake who prevented numerous disasters. Thus the son served as a champion to undo all the damage that the father and his nemesis had started. Without even knowing about The Boss until the end, Solid Snake truly lived the virtue that The Boss envisioned by not trying to forcefully change the world but repeatedly saving it no matter how thankless the job was. Big Boss's greatest legacy is without a doubt Solid Snake.

In a final effort to encourage his son to avoid further suffering, Big Boss told Solid Snake to spend the rest of Snake's life not as a soldier, but as a man. Having spent his entire life fighting and experiencing great sorrow as a result, Big Boss made it clear that no one needs to die for another person's cause. People must believe in themselves and fight for what they feel is right, for in the end they alone can judge their own deeds. As Big Boss smoked his last cigar and shared a fatherly moment with his son, he finally passed away on top of The Boss's grave.

Revolver "Shalashaska" Ocelot

Revolver "Shalashaska" Ocelot

*SPOILER WARNING*

Revolver Ocelot, real name Adamska (Russian: Адамска), and also known as ADAM, Shalashaska (Russian: Шалашаска), or simply Ocelot (Russian: Оцелот), was an operative of FOXHOUND and an agent of the Patriots. A master of interrogation and a formidable gunfighter, he was often referred to as a "ricochet genius" in regards to his gun fighting skills. A fanatic, he was known for his affinity of Spaghetti Westerns, as evidenced by his choice of weapon and his clothing, duster and spurs, the traditional garb of cowboys. His weapon of choice was the Colt Single Action Army Revolver, which he described as "the greatest handgun ever made."

Throughout his career, Ocelot became personally acquainted with all four members of the Snake family: a friendly rival to Big Boss, the right hand man for Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake, and a nemesis to Solid Snake. Specializing in infiltrations of a different nature than Solid Snake and Big Boss, Ocelot often acted as a triple agent, to serve multiple interests in the same situation.

Benedict "Kazuhira" Miller

Benedict "Kazuhira" Miller

*SPOILER WARNING*

Benedict "Kazuhira" Miller (カズヒラ・ミラー Kazuhira Mirā?), also known as McDonell Benedict Miller and Master Miller, was the second-in-command of the Militaires Sans Frontières and Diamond Dogs, and the survival trainer of FOXHOUND. He was well-read and possessed a vast array of scientific knowledge.

Miller, Big Boss, and a third individual were hospitalized in the aftermath of XOF's attack, with Miller himself suffering lacerations to his face. He was informed that Big Boss had been resuscitated, although the time take to do so caused him to fall into a coma. Miller then asked about the status of the third patient.

Miller and the other survivors of MSF eventually reformed as the Diamond Dogs. In 1984, Miller led a unit in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion, but was captured and tortured by the Soviets, and the rest of his unit was killed. While in captivity, he lost his right arm and left leg. Miller was later found in a prison by Big Boss, who helped him to escape the country.

The attempts to destroy MSF, combined with the suffering endured during captivity, made Miller extremely vengeful towards Cipher and obsessed with its destruction. He later attended the funeral for all those who had died in battle, believing that their cremated remains would be buried at sea, although Big Boss instead ordered that they be formed into diamonds, which Miller felt would give the soldiers a "light" even after death.

Quiet

Quiet

*SPOILER WARNING*

Quiet (Russian: ТИХИЙ) was a mute female sniper who was active during the 1980s, and was feared by the Afghanistan-occupying Soviet forces. Whether she was actually mute or simply unwilling to speak is unknown, however she was able to communicate with Big Boss by humming noises. In 1984, she managed to save Big Boss, and effectively surrendered herself into Diamond Dogs custody. Because of this, despite Kazuhira Miller's insistence that they kill her due to her being too much of a liability because of her discovering the location of Mother Base, Ocelot and Big Boss instead suggested that they lock her up, although Big Boss agreed that she might have to be killed if she proved to be too much of a threat to Diamond Dogs' existence, adding that he would be the one to kill her. Some time later, she was tortured by Ocelot and managed to neutralize three Diamond Dogs soldiers on Mother Base. As Miller feared, she had been ordered to destroy Diamond Dogs.

Eli

Eli

*SPOILER WARNING*

Eli was a boy who encountered Big Boss in 1984. During this time, he entered a physical struggle with Big Boss and pinned the latter behind a chair. Eli then withdrew a knife and attempted to stab him, only for his older opponent to parry the blow and knock him to the ground, disarming the boy and threatening him with his own knife. He would later chase Big Boss while commandeering a Metal Gear in Skull Face's possession.

Later on, he and a second identical boy were seen standing next to each other.

It is assumed that Eli is, in fact, a young Liquid Snake.

Huey Emmerich

Huey Emmerich

*SPOILER WARNING*

Dr. "Huey" Emmerich was a mechanical engineer responsible for developing bipedal locomotion technology for the Peace Walker Project in 1974. He was the father of Hal "Otacon" Emmerich.

Emmerich was born on August 6, 1945 (the day of the Hiroshima bombing) as the son of a Manhattan Project scientist. He was born a paraplegic, unable to walk because his spine was abnormally shaped, and thus confined to a wheelchair. Although he used to respect his father because his research had saved American lives, his respect decreased significantly during the fifth grade when a Japanese transfer student showed him photos of what happened in Hiroshima after the bomb hit.

Emmerich joined NASA after graduating from MIT (after skipping a few grades) and worked alongside Strangelove, who gave Emmerich the nickname "Huey." Huey was once considered to be part of a project involving space rockets, but he was eventually relocated after it was cancelled due to détente.

Huey was one of the minority in favor of an inspection by the UN of Mother Base, wanting MSF to be the poster boys of world peace. He even sent a letter indicating that MSF had changed their minds regarding their earlier refusal as well as getting at least two major western networks to do stories on them, with the intention of "proving" that MSF doesn't have a nuke. Big Boss and Kazuhira Miller, however, were irritated at Huey for this due to their being a private firm and thus not actually applicable to UN laws, hence their earlier refusal. Despite his crush on Strangelove, he let go of the fact that she left Mother Base due to the AI department not giving results as well as ZEKE being completed anyways, deciding that he had "bigger issues to worry about." As such, because of his involvement in the UN investigation occurring, Huey was the only civilian to remain on Mother Base, with the civilians, including Cécile Cosima Caminades, having been evacuated earlier. Huey handled the preparations for the UN inspection while Big Boss went to rescue Chico and Paz due to the former recklessly attempting to rescue the latter.

Huey later reported to Snake that everything was going smoothly with the inspection around the time Paz had forced abdominal surgery practiced to remove a bomb planted inside her. However, the inspection resulted in Mother Base being attacked by the mysterious Cipher-backed group XOF, forcing Huey to escape. It is implied by Skull Face in Chico's Tape #6 that Huey inadvertently helped XOF infiltrate MSF's Mother Base by thinking they were IAEA inspectors.

Huey eventually got married, fathering a son in 1980, whom he named Hal.

By 1984, Huey had developed a mechanical exoskeleton for his lower body, granting him the ability to walk. A hooded Huey was later tortured by Soviet interrogation specialist Ocelot, who threw water over him, as well as injected him with a drug (presumably truth serum). This was overseen by Kazuhira Miller and Big Boss, presumably for his suspected role in XOF's attack on Mother Base nine years earlier. Big Boss also personally placed a bag over his head during the interrogation sequence.

mmerich later parted ways with Big Boss, divorced Hal's mother, and went on to remarry a British woman named Julie Danziger. In 1997, Emmerich discovered that his second wife was having an affair with his son, and decided to drown himself in the family pool, nearly taking his stepdaughter with him. His suicide was later covered up as an accident, something Emma herself believed as well, although Hal secretly knew the truth and blamed himself.

Skull Face

Skull Face

*SPOILER WARNING*

Skull Face was the heavily scarred commander of the military group XOF during the 1970s. Skull Face would also become a commander of the Parasite Unit in the 1980s. He suffered extensive injuries in his youth which caused his characteristic facial scars, burns, and discolorations, most notably a Glasgow smile.

The man who became Skull Face was born to two rural factory workers in a small village in Hungary. His childhood was interrupted when the factory was bombed, under the (correct) suspicion that it was a weapons manufacturing site. He was trampled in the aftermath by a mob of civilians rushing to escape, and sustained significant injuries during the chaos, including being doused in boiling oil. His medical condition was critical; a nurse treating his wounds in an infirmary remarked that he ought to be euthanized. He was left with dramatic deformities and nerve damage that rendered him unable to feel pain, both conditions which were exacerbated when he was tortured by foreign hands later in life.

Skull Face had shown himself to be extremely dangerous, ruthless and sadistic, going to great lengths to achieve his goals. Having tortured both Paz and Chico both mentally and physically to get the information he wanted, Skull Face still tortured them stating, "we're half way there." During his interrogations and torturing with Paz, he would play the 1971 song "Here's to You" by Joan Baez, out loud.

He was also very skilled at interrogation, which was best demonstrated with his interrogation of an MSF Intel Team agent, where despite not getting any information on Big Boss, the prisoner admitted that of the interrogators at the base, Skull Face came the closest to breaking him.[4]

Skull Face was a brilliant strategist, as he manipulated both the MSF and his two prisoners into playing into his hands. Despite his nature, he attempted to implore a previous prisoner to join his side and live for revenge, though the prisoner ended up dying. He also told one of his soldiers that Paz needed to recover from the torture, although only because he needed her alive. During a torture session, he told a soldier to stop whipping Paz because she was no good to him dead.

Because of his cruel upbringing, he was shown to be extremely nihilistic, understanding hope only in the sense of it being a survival skill and otherwise not viewing it as important.

In 1984, he was seen wearing a domino mask and carrying a sawed off lever-action rifle.

"Ishmael"

"Ishmael"

*SPOILER WARNING*

Ishmael was a hospital patient whom Big Boss met in 1984. During this time, he wore bandages over his face, obscuring all but his mouth and eyes.

Ishmael claimed that he had watched over Big Boss for the nine years that he had been in a coma following an attack on Mother Base, and attempted to help him escape the hospital. He also claimed that he was a former acquaintance of Big Boss, eventually giving him a shot of digoxin that helped him move to some extent. He escorted Big Boss over to the stairs, although he decided to take the lifts instead after it became apparent that Big Boss had not recovered enough to actually walk. They eventually arrived at the lifts, but encountered a child wearing a gas mask standing in their path, who then levitated up through the ceiling. After witnessing this, the lift doors suddenly exploded, setting Ishmael alight as an apparition appeared that resembled a demonic version of Colonel Volgin, before it departed due to the activation of the emergency sprinklers. Ishmael then led Big Boss back the way they had come, in the currently blazing room, towards the emergency stairs.

Journalists who previewed "The Phantom Pain" were forbidden to talk about Ishmael's identity, so it can be assumed that he is integral to the game's story.
