On Tuesday, March 4, the rebel-held city of Idlib in Syria was bombed, but unlike most bombings, this attack carried an incredibly deadly chemical component that is suspected to involve sarin gas, which is tasteless, colorless, odorless, and devastating. The attack injured at least 600 people, and killed 100, of which at least 21 were children or even infants, who are more vulnerable to gas attacks.

According to Muhammad, a field coordinator for the Alrahama Hospital in Khan Sheikhoun, they themselves currently had in their care more than 200 people, and that they had already seen 25 deaths, most of which, again, were kids.

Most kids arrived already dead, especially the infants. They were more affected than the adults. Twenty-five deaths happened in our hospital.

The primary treatment the hospital is using on patients is atropine, a drug used to treat exposure to certain types of nerve agent. In short, the gas used wasn't chlorine but something much, much worse, suspected to be sarin gas, which would potentially constitute a major war crime. To make matters worse, the gassing occurred as people slept, meaning that many had no chance of survival and simply inhaled it in their beds, but many more died convulsing in the streets, attempting to escape it.

Doctors are now being faced with the terrible decision of who to save, without sufficient time and resources to assist everyone who needs help.

The doctors are having to choose who to save; that is the worst thing. To look at the more advanced patients and choose instead to save someone who isn’t suffering as badly. At least 21 who have died are children.
