An Historic Moment in Time
Sgt. Nathaniel Boehme enlisted in the military just 6 days before the September 11 terrorist attacks. He was deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and still serves as an active duty member of the Air National Guard.
Despite his military accomplishments, Boehme's life as a serviceman was marred by secrecy and fear.
Moving Towards Change
As a gay man serving during the Don't Ask, Don't Tell era, Boehme was forced to serve in silence, keeping his sexual orientation a carefully guarded secret.
When the DADT policy was repealed in 2011, 10 years after he enlisted, he finally felt free.
Boehme is now married and serves as the nation's first official advocate and coordinator for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender veterans.
On Sunday, Boehme marked another first in his career: he walked in Seattle's Pride parade in his military uniform--the first openly gay military member to do so in the parade's 43-year history.
A Symbolic Moment
Sgt. Boehme hopes his gesture offers support and comfort to both current LGBT military members and those who aspire to serve.
"Those who want to serve need not do so in silence anymore, and I would say follow your heart," Boehme said at the Pride parade.
As a gay service member, it’s really monumental because it means that we are working toward a military and a community that’s more inclusive and recognizes all people’s contributions to the service of this nation no matter wh
