Richard Overton, 111, WWII Veteran
A Storied Life
Richard Overton arrived at Pearl Harbor just moments after the historic Japanese bombing in 1941.
76 years later, he's making the most of a quiet life in Austin--complete with Tampa Sweet cigars, some whiskey, and a lot of rest.
Overton celebrated his 111th birthday on May 11th in Austin, and over 200 visitors from his neighborhood stopped in at his home.
Whiskey and Cigars: The Secret to Longevity?
Mr. Overton is famous for his fondness for cigars--caregivers and friends say he smokes around 12-13 Tampa Sweets a day.
He also loves his porch.
The front porch of the house Overton built himself 70 years ago is known to friends and family as his "stage." He sometimes spend up to 12 hours a day on that porch, receiving visitors, watching the birds and enjoying a sip of whiskey or two.
