What to watch for in the McDonald's All-American Game

Jahlil Okafor and Justin Jackson played in the 2014 game.

At least six players that will suit up for Duke or North Carolina next season will play in the 41st annual McDonald's All-American Game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night on ESPN. One uncommitted player, E.J. Montgomery, is considering both programs.

Nassir Little

Little will arrive in Chapel Hill with a college-ready body with advanced strength and athleticism, playing with the type of effort and energy it sometimes takes freshmen time to learn. He's known as much for his defensive abilities as his offense, where he finishes well around the basket and has enough of a jumpshot to keep defenders honest.

Coby White

White isn't the most highly-ranked player on the list, but he might be the most important to his team's success thanks to his ability to play point guard. With Jalek Felton leaving Carolina and Seventh Woods yet to earn a major role, White will have every opportunity to earn the starting job.

His game steadily improved over the past three years, becoming a polished scorer at all three levels and an excellent ballhandler. At 165 pounds, White obviously needs to put on some weight to prepare for what he'll face in the ACC, and a summer in the Tar Heels' program should pay off.

White probably won't be wearing No. 23 next season, however.

Zion Williamson

Thanks to the social media era, mixtapes and Drake occasionally wearing his jersey, Williamson might be the most well-known high school basketball player of all-time. He's known for the dunks, but what else is there to his game? That same highlight-reel athleticism and strength will help him excel as a rebounder and post finisher in the ACC. while also showing he's capable of working as a distributor. His jumpshot is still developing, as is his defensive motor, which could help him become an elite rim protector. Williamson has appeared leaner this week leading up to the game.

R.J. Barrett

He doesn't come with the same level of fanfare as Williamson, but the Canadian is the top prospect in the class and already the favorite to be selected first overall in the 2020 NBA Draft. In the small-ball era, he's about as close to the prototype as a coach could draw up with the ability to run the offense on one end while guarding a power forward on the other. A strong athlete, Barrett is about 20 pounds heavier than last year and will benefit from adding more weight and becoming a more consistent shooter. Given he won't turn 18 until June, Barrett's potential is unlimited.

Tre Jones

As always, Duke's revolving door at point guard offers plenty of intrigue. Jones is likely the best the Blue Devils will have had since his brother, Tyus, led them to a national title in 2015. Generally regarded as a top-50 recruit early on, Jones hit his stride as a junior and became the top point guard in the class, built in the mold of Tyus. He's a pure, pass-first point guard but possesses an excellent stroke from 3-point range and the athleticism to finish in traffic despite his size.

Cam Reddish

Reddish fits the mold of what Duke has done in recent years with its perimeter players, with the ability to play three (possibly four) possitions thanks to excellent length and athleticism. He's listed as a shooting guard, but the Blue Devils will make use of his versatility all over the floor. Reddish is a strong athlete capable of getting his own shot, but is still working to find consistency there. His physical tools allow him to defend multiple positions well. Several scouting reports have listed concerns over consistency with Reddish's effort on every possession.

It seems Reddish has heard those concerns and is working to address them.

The Wildcard

E.J. Montgomery, the third-ranked power forward and 12th overall, is considering both Carolina and Duke after visiting the schools unofficially in February. At 6-10, 200 pounds, Montgomery has some work to do in developing his body, but has the athleticism and skillset to score at all three levels.

N.C. State's success

Don't forget about the Wolfpack. Chris Corchiani (center) is one of 15 McDonald's All-Americans to play at N.C. State, ranking it 18th all-time among college programs.

Manning in rare company

Wake Forest coach Danny Manning is in a few exclusive clubs among McDonald's All-Americans. The former Page High star was selected following his senior year at Lawrence High School (Kan.), then helped lead Kansas to a national title and became one of 27 former McDonald's All-Americans taken first overall in the NBA Draft. He's certainly the only current ACC coach to accomplish those feats, though former Louisville interim head coach David Padgett was chosen for the 2003 game.

The 2001 game was played at Cameron Indoor Stadium, where Eddy Curry scored 28 points to lead the West to a 131-125 victory. Daniel Ewing played on his future homecourt, while Jawad Williams went on to Carolina and Julius Hodge played at N.C. State. In all, 17 players from the game went on to play in the NBA, with five foregoing college to declare for the draft.
