Self pity and a defeatist attitude will hurt your progress a lot more than ill health does.
Daniel Rand (Iron Fist)
The Cost Of His Training
Daniel Rand was a wealthy child. His father, Wendell Rand, co-owned the very successful Rand Coporation. When Daniel was 9 years old, he traveled to Tibet with his mother and father. Harold Meachum, his father's business partner, was also invited along.
They went far into the mountains, searching for the nexus that would allow them entrance to the other-dimensional city of K'un Lun. Danny lost his footing and fell over an ice-shelf and in his panic brought his parents down with him. While he and his mom, Heather, landed on a ledge below his father was not so lucky. Wendell was left hanging from the cliff and called out to his friend for aid. Harold wanted his partner's share of the company however, and so caused Wendell to lose his grip and fall to his death.
Meditating
Danny sits and meditates on the knowledge from "The Book of the Iron Fist".
Finding K'un Lun... The Hard Way
Heather and Danny had survived, and they spurned Meachum's attempt to help them. While attempting to make it back to camp on their own they were ambushed by a pack of wolves. The two spotted a long suspension bridge as they were ambushed by a pack of wolves. As Danny ran for the bridge with all his energy, Heather tried to fend off the wolves and was killed in the effort.
Soon after that the people of K'un Lun found the young boy, and brought him back to their city.
Iron Fist, Old & New
Becoming The Iron Fist
Danny was allowed to stay in the city of K'un Lun and told that he was to learn martial arts under the tutelage of Lei Kung the Thunderer.
His training was harsh and meticulous, and by the age of sixteen he had earned the Crown of Fu-Hsi - king of the vipers. He had also defeated a mechanical beast called "Shu-Hu," and defeated four opponents in the "Challenge of the Many."
Then, at only nineteen, he was offered the chance to acquire the power of the Iron Fist. While battling a fire-breathing serpent he reached into the beasts body and plunged his hands into it's molten heart. The serpent imprinted its scar onto Rand's chest in the form of a tattoo, and his hands were now glowing with energy... he could now channel a mystical force to reinforce the power of his hand-strikes.

Leaving K'un Lun
Danny decided he would leave the other-dimensional city where he had been trained, and head back to his home-world - Earth. There he seeks revenge, is blamed for murder, and he even partners up with Luke Cage to form "Heroes For Hire Inc." Though I think those stories would be better told by the comics, perhaps they'll be told in the Netflix series!
