TUSCALOOSA TRAINS SLOWING DOWN TRAFFIC
Adriana McGhee

In Tuscaloosa, Alabama the likelihood of getting stuck in traffic due to a train is high. Tuscaloosa is an Amtrak intercity rail station that's located at 1205 Greensboro Ave. The two most populated train tracks are located on 15th St. and Greensboro Avenue, but spans throughout Tuscaloosa. When a train crosses the tracks, it can range from one to 15 minutes in length. This can result in University of Alabama students and staff being late to class or meetings.

Two-Point Turns During Traffic Jams

This train's duration was two minutes and 30 seconds on 15th street. After only 11 seconds, two cars made a two point turn to avoid the growing traffic.

"Theres been so many times that I've left for class 30 minutes early and still ended up being super late because the train took so long," said junior UA student, Madelyn McCormick.
Most students and staff live off campus, which increases their chance of getting stopped by a train. The Amtrak station runs all day long- from early in the morning, to late at night. Because they're ongoing, there's not a certain time that you can leave to avoid them.

"I can't remember the last time I wasn't stopped by a train. It seems like every day that I'm about to cross the tracks, I see the little gate coming down and the flashing lights," said sophomore UA student, Lexi Tucker.

This train crossed the tracks behind University House at 12:32 am and stopped traffic for approximately 10 minutes and 23 seconds. Traffic was at a standstill that resulted in a long line of several cars on each side.

The same train as depicted above when it first starting crossing the tracks. Aggravated drivers made three point turns to leave, but heavy traffic flow was still created.

This train crossed at 3:45 p.m. and lasted three minutes and five seconds.

Because the Amtrak system is an important mode of transportation for some people, it will never cease to exist. As students and staff of UA, we just have to learn to take a deep breath and be patient when a train stops us.
